Discussion: FBI Director Offers New Clues Accusing North Korea Of Sony Hack

Discussion for article #231767

I’m not a techie, but this doesn’t feel right to me. I don’t think North Korea is behind it as a nation-state, anyway. Plus our government’s cyber capabilities are so far behind current technological capability, I would be more apt to trust the private companies who have come out against blaming North Korea. I started my career working for the FBI about 8 years ago and they were just getting around to giving everyone desktop access to the internet. Even in the HQ in DC, people had to share a machine in their office to access internet capability. Internet research is a basic intelligence research function and we are talking about 1 to 2 machines per 8-12 people. During Louis Freeh’s time at the FBI, agents were required to share computer monitors on a swivel mechanism on holes cut into their cubicle walls between the desks.

It’s hard to explain, but North Korea has tried and failed miserably at all sorts of international activities aimed at trying to seem like some sort of scary powerhouse and they fail. All the time. It’s hard to believe that they have these power hackers in a country with ridiculously backward internet capability who decided, of all the political and business targets available, Sony seemed like a good start. It doesn’t make sense.
