Discussion: Father Of Pulse Nightclub Shooter Attends Clinton Rally Near Orlando

It’s always good to have support in a swing state, but you didn’t have to come out in the heat and show your support in public. You really, really shouldn’t have.

I hope the father sues Donnie Drumpf for the loss of his child, as a result of Donnie’s ā€œMake America Hate Againā€ campaign.

With friends like these… for some reason, today every story seems ready made for GOP propaganda purposes.

I’m not really sure what the point of this article is. Is the father somehow responsible for his son’s actions? Does his attending a rally for Clinton have any bearing on her policies, or how she’d be as President? Was there any danger to her?

What’s the point?

ETA: I see steviedee’s post above. Trump’s tweet does make Mateen’s attendance ā€œrelevantā€ now, I suppose.
ETA: steviedee fooled me with his fake tweet. I will never, ever, trust anything I read on the internet ever again.

There is no point except for the GOP to use it to smear. BTW, daddy is not very sympathetic in his views – he is a homophobe himself. Its weird he would show up and position himself to be seated in the camera view behind her.

Cue the FrightWing Nutjobs (aka: The Republican Party) to begin the freakout in 3…2…1…

ā€œShe supports jihadists. She’s pandering to terrorists. She personally invited him. She sent him emails with classified information. She consulted with him about BEN…GHA…ZEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!..argle bargle…argle bargleā€¦ā€

FOX and The Trump Strumpet Spokesperson Brigade soon on TV…

Yeah, I get that he’s not sympathetic, but it’s a thin reed on which to base an article. I admit that I was a bit naive to think that somehow Trump wouldn’t instantly try to smear her with it right away, though.

Trump loyalists respond in their usual calm and reasoned way:

I don’t get it. What is the point of this article? I read it but it does not seem to contain anything newsworthy. I realize the reporter has to submit ā€œxā€ number of words and ā€œxā€ number of articles, but wasn’t there a cat stuck in a tree somewhere?

I think that there is a caution that the right will make a lot of this issue and already are. Clearly no one knew who he was and did not place him there intentionally. But that will not stop Fox News, etc.

Tabloid journalism; the puerile press. This story is completely irrelevant to any tangible discussion of policy. What next, will George Zimmerman be ā€œseenā€ at a Donald Trump rally or Dylann Roof’s mom at a Taylor Swift concert? I’m beginning to fear that most of the nation’s citizens never graduated from Junior High. No wonder we can’t have nice things.

True, but with the entire right-wing nut-job corps snarling, salivating, and hurling invective at Hillary from every possible direction 24/7, for items like this, it’s "take a number.’ People are becoming inured. Things like this become part of the background noise. Meh!

Don’t forget how the GOP scum operatives use this sort of crap. They went to the effort of photoshopping pictures of Kerry in with photos of Jane Fonda to smear John Kerry as a traitor who was fucking Fonda and working for the Communists and against the United States. It went far beyond ā€˜Swiftboating’ and was, of course, designed to appeal to the lowest of the low ignoramuses in their party and anyone stupid enough to swallow such swill in general.

In the end it won’t help them in the general, but it will be used to gin up more and more hate and division. And for that alone the Rightwingnuttery, in all its shameless glory, must be confronted vigorously at every turn.

Let’s keep our powder dry, folks. This story’s not going anywhere.

Frankly, I think the press should leave this poor man alone. He has more than enough to deal with.

Tangent time!!! How did TPM miss this? This is comic gold:

I can understand Trump trying to use this against Hillary, but he’s only playing to his base here – people who already will not vote for Hillary. His asinine tweet about a cabinet position is nothing but 4th grade childishness and I can’t even imagine the large majority of his own idiot supporters believe that’s true.

Maybe it’s still too soon, but people need to remember this man also lost someone. I can’t say I know the particulars in this family dynamic, and I fully blame this messed-up soul’s understanding of Islam and his own self-hatred for being gay. I sincerely wish I’d had a chance to meet him long before he got to that day. I’ve met a few gay men in my time who were really conflicted about their religious upbringing and their sexuality. I really felt for them. A part of me feels bad for the man who killed those 49 people and maimed so many others. What a fucking tormented life he must have been living. I don’t know his Dad’s role in all that – it’s likely we’ll never really know.

I doubt Hillary’s campaign knew he’d be there. I actually find it a bit comforting knowing he has considered who’d be best to lead us forward–knowing fully well his son’s actions are still fresh in the psyche of many and are part of what many think is wrong with America–that he thinks Hillary is best equipped to lead us forward.

Trump is an asshole. The vast majority of his supporters are assholes. Hillary isn’t really trying to appeal to assholes … unless they’re interested in changing from asshole to actually concerned citizen who wants America to progress.

Anyway, I don’t think this event–Mr. Mateen supporting Hillary–is necessarily bad. Perhaps he might even be an asset, at some point, to helping bridging gaps between LGBTQ community, parents (P-FLAG), mental illness, etc.

ETA: I know Mr. Mateen is thought to be a homophobe–and I don’t really doubt it. My post is part my better angels speaking and part the flat-out fact he’s an American citizen and he’s going to support someone. I think it’s not really a big story unless the press want it to be a big story.

Well, that’s not an anomaly, it merely puts him in league with roughly 1/2 the nation’s populace.
