Discussion for article #225570
More power to them. Crappy wages and no power over working conditions is no way to live.
Thanks to anti-union governors like Snyder and Walker, more American workers will be facing those conditions.
More power to them. HuffPost ran an article a few weeks back outlining all the unethical labor practices of McDonalds, it was enough to make me never eat at one of their restaurants again (Not that I ate there that often to begin with) but I haven’t been to a McDonalds in about three years anyway. I hope the workers get what they want, they deserve a livable wage.
“…workers will discuss the future of the effort…”
Yep, it’s right there in the First Amendment – the most important amendment, according to conservatives – right there beside Freedom of Religion.
Freedom of Assembly. The right of the people to “come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend common interests.” [Wikipedia]
Unions are as American as church.
Food service is hot, greasy, pressured, hard, unattractive work. These companies make a comfortable margin on their operations. I can easily see food service workers at McDonald’s making $20 an hour by 2020 and the ownership still making a comfortable profit from the enterprise. Your meal deal might go up as much as a dollar. but the quality will be better and since you are putting this into your body, your quality of life might be just a little better too. Everybody wins. A family of 2 McDonalds employees will make $80,000 a year - they’ll be able to afford a decent roof over their heads in most locations, house feed and clothes and educate their children in something close to a middle class sort of existence - with access to affordable health insurance - and they will pay income taxes too! It’s all good.
The reason your quality goes up is because the worker’s near-middle class livelihood is now tied to your satisfaction. Suddenly his stake in the operation has gone up. He becomes a more dedicated, professional worker. I see this all the time when I go over seas to countries where ordinary workers have tenure - their livelihood is tied into customers satisfaction so they are more dedicated to your satisfaction and more professional . You see this even more in the airline industry. Travel on a foreign carrier and the workers are calmer, more professional. Slide over to the American carrier and the workers are more harried and more stressed. This is because they have more leverage and that leads to better working conditions and better livelihood, which inturn leads to greater dedication and professionalism.

Please 'splain this to our captains of industry who are supposed to know all this already but evidently do not.
G R E E D: Find out what it means to me.
Keep up the pressure! And remember what it took last time. We may see a new Pinkertons before this is over.
Mickey D’s can blow me. Imagine getting paid with a debit card that you have to pay your employer to use. That would have started a civil war 100 years ago.
