My college daughter is very proud of her Kate Spade iPhone case!
The article does not even suggest why Ms. Spade took her own life. Robin Williams was suffering terribly from ghastly diseases; his actions were understandable. What was Ms. Spadeās motivation?
had a name, LāWren Scott.
RIP, Ms Spade.
There are really only a handful of designers whoāve managed to create names in fashion as big as hers in the past 20-30 years. I remember when her bags came out and the only ābagā I carried at the time was a backpack.
the mother of a 13 year old, thatās who.
How massively depressed would you need to be to do that to a 13-year-old girl? Sheās going to require therapy for the rest of her life provided she survives at all. Contagion is a very real threat in the wake of any suicide. Problem is that people donāt think rationally in the grip of depression.
Not exactly a close reader, are you?
āFound hanged.ā
The coupleās 13-year-old daughter was at school at the time and officials said a note was found at the scene telling her it was not her fault.
OH no. I adored Kate Spade purses when I was a teenager and saved money until I could afford one. Her designs always made me smile and want to live in a Kate Spade decorated world. What a tragic loss. My heart goes out to her family.
@nymund. Massively depressed. Are we going back to the old ways of judging people who take their own lives as mortal sinners who go straight to hell? A friend described his descent into the deep, dark hole of depression that left him without feelings other that that he could no longer bear the pain of existing. Depression is an illness just as much as cancer is an illness.
Who is judging anyone? I simply point out the consequences of suicide which are very real and frequently lead to further tragedy. Of course depression is an illness but the appropriate reaction is to seek treatment. Killing yourself and leaving a traumatized child to handle the fallout as best she can is completely irresponsible.

Not judging? A motherās suicide most certainly traumatizes a child, and I hope the young girl is able to find solace and comfort at some time in the future. For you or anyone to judge her mother will not help her.
Do you know that Spade did not seek treatment? Treatment does not always cure, or you would not have people committing suicide in mental health facilities.
It is a sad story, and I had never heard of her before today.
That note whatever its content will certainly be a consolation to her daughter as she grows up motherless and maybe blaming herself for not being a good enough daughter. Also, nowhere is there reporting on what Spadeās motivation was for killing herself. Being a āclose readerā canāt be done without something to read.
Irresponsible to kill herself. Sheās not the first woman who was an artist to act so irresponsibly, think Sylvia Plath.
The comment board could have shut down after your post because itās devolved into blaming the victim and why didnāt she get the help she so desperately needed which would have cured anything bothering her.
@littlegirlblue Ever since I read the terrifying account of my friendās descent into the hell of the black hole of the depths of depression, I have never criticized anyone who commits suicide. He survived to tell the tale, and, though years have passed, I have never forgotten his story.
Iāve known three people who killed themselves. No one ever really understood why and in one case a wife and beloved child were left behind. Their pain must have been such that death was the only release from it.
What?
On December 11, 2010, my nephew, a 22 yr old college senior, drove to the cemetery where his grandfather is buried, and, with the rifle his uncle gave him as a gift, shot himself in the head. The grief and pain felt by the large community that truly loved and cherished him has been indescribable. So, whevever I learn that someone has taken his or her own life, Iām sad.
I was complimenting you, praising you, for your wisdom in what you wrote. Particularly this which showed tremendous compassion amidst all the jokey and snarky comments.
- Iām sad sheās gone, and sad she took her own life.*
Nothing nefarious going on.
