People just trying to live the American Dream until the racist cops (who were probably shaking them down for protection money) and asshole neighbors hounded them into becoming “radicalized”.

They prefer the term home cooked terrorism.
If some of the other allegations against him are accurate (domestic violence) he might well have been a nasty kinda guy who seized on the prejudice against him and his family as a reason to blow things up. We may find some precipitating event in his recent history, or not.
(And yeah, I would not be surprised if the lawsuit had merit)
