Discussion: Fairfax Compares 'Rush To Judgment' Over Sexual Assault Allegations To Lynchings

That would be like taking the one brick out of the wall that would make the whole fucking thing come down. It would be awesome.

@misterneutron :joy: I think you’re right - I think the Democrats would try that and try really hard.

Don’t talk about Roberts like that!

Do any black people fall for this playing the “lynch card”?

There is a double standard for black guys who get accused/convicted of sexual abuse (contrasts Ricky Kelly, Bill Cosby with Epstein, Trump, Kavenaugh, etc.), but FFS? Though if he was a black conservative I guess he’d walk too.

Fairfax is just stupid. I don’t want him around, no matter how this episode resolves. I would be ecstatic if he switched parties.

What about the other black VA legislators signaling they were OK with what he said?
We need to get to a place where it doesn’t matter what color you are…some things are OK and some things are not.

If it is wrong…it is wrong. Not made OK because other black folks may have had the same thought in their head for a moment. If that is OK then every Red Republican can just start spouting the worst MAGA crap…because they heard their constituents saying it too.

Um…would that be a Baghdad Bob Mr. Potato Head?

Saddam Hussein

I could have chose a Kim Jong Il but he looked more like Elton John. Idi Amin was available but his little green envelope hat looked a little funny

I was going to guess Saddam, but I don’t remember that Patch on the beret. Obviously your handle should have persuaded me.

I would hope that what Fairfax meant was that it was unjust and even extralegal for the legislature to try him before law enforcement had investigated the accusations against him but phrased it poorly. Black men have sufficient reasons to be wary of these kinds of proceedings however one likes to look at them.

That’s about as generous as I can see at the moment but based on this and the governor’s faux pas I have to say that Virginia Democrats really need to work on a better quality of political leadership.

The problem with the Democratic strategy is they think they must be saints, without a single flaw in order to avoid being accused of hypocrisy when they accuse Republicans of similar wrong-doing.

Someone needs to explain to them that for the Republicans guilt is irrelevant. The only thing that matters to them is whether not they can make their lies stick and weaken their Democratic opponent and defeat them.

To believe there is a shred of actual decency behind their defenses is to assume “what about” excuses are a legit reason to excuse their bad behavior instead of claiming 2 wrongs make a right.

Of Course Fairfax is aware. That’s why he used it but the fool is too arrogant or just-a-fool to realize Uncle-Thomas’ faux outrage can’t be recycled by “YOU”.

So was Kavanaugh subjected to an unjust and extra-legal procedure when he had to deal with accusations at his confirmation hearing? Since the standard for holding high office should be something other than just they didn’t have the evidence to convict beyond a reasonable doubt., I’d argue no.

Agreed that black men have a right to be wary of such proceedings but it is alsio true that the rights of black women have a history of being regarded as unimportant. It is an area where it behooves whites in America to be extremely careful.

But the accusation of mistreatment based an stereotypes and/or having rights disregarded can also be used to brush back justified accusations.

It is also true that the impulse to support a leader of your communities and/or your party who is personally known to you can be almost overwhelming yet this cannot be allowed to override the rights of the women reporting their complaints.

There are no good options for the Virginia Democrats. The only thing they can do is to bear the GOP schadenfreude with as much dignity as possible and insist that the proceedings be conducted with decorum and fairness.

You mean like…

But black lawmakers did not object to Fairfax’s speech.

“He said what he needed to say,” said Sen. Mamie Locke.

?

He can’t be forced out, and he’s not resigning until/unless law enforcement investigates and turns up something concrete. As a white American, I’m gonna take my cue from the black members of the VA Legislature and say ‘yup, he said that’ and leave it there.

Jackass, but that’s a conditional response in case it turns out that AP left out important context.

That’s cool.

…still feels like Kavanaugh whiplash…the trifecta! Manafort’s and Stone’s disciples at work, actually…the accusations should be taken seriously, and properly argued in a court of law.

I THINK his accusers are two black women. Are they “lynching” him?
