Guessing it will be another rolling market day for Facebook stock, between outcries of users who receive the notifications and Zuckerberg’s Trip to Congress (Z’s trip to Congress, I believe, is also today.)
When will “logging in thru Facebook” be phased out everywhere. Not being a Facebook user, there are plenty of sites I DO NOT visit because the only option is to “Sign in with Facebook”.
I hope it was, my FB account is fake. Hahahaha
I never thought Facebook was worth a weak fart, and remain convinced still. It’s bad enough that Google is looking over my shoulder all the time, not to mention WaPo, and probably the New Yorker.
What is the possibility of the 30 million, or whatever number turns out to be correct, filing a class action lawsuit against FB and Cambridge Anal for invasion of privacy? I didn’t take the test but I bet a lot of FB users would like to get a piece of either one of them. Maybe Avenatti could take it up, just hearing his name would put the fear of Dog in them.
Wouldn’t it be far simpler for Facebook to notify those 200 or 300 FB users whose date WASN’T compromised?
I am still trying to figure out what Cambridge Analytica did that was illegal or violated Facebook’s policies. I guess there might have been some shady stuff involving the Russian speaking scholar and they did target the US elections from out of the country.
That is not to say I have any brief with Cambridge Analytica’s unethical behavior. Targeting voters with trolls and bots and refusing to announce yourself in doing so is inherently unethical and anti-democratic. It is sort of like planting shills to run a lynch mob.
This feels like a time we are going to be required to reexamine the first amendment, and political speech.
Actually my extended family uses Facebook to stay in touch. Except for my Trump supporter Aunt most of the family stays away from politics on Facebook. It is a pretty good way to remain connected when you have a relatively large family scattered all over the country.
The problem with Facebook is it has become infected with members (trolls and bots) intent on starting political fights.
One thing that has me curious, recently my Aunt was hospitalized with a serious medical issue. While she was off line, hate filled conservative posts started appearing on my screen claiming my Aunt “likes” this or that conservative message. It looks like some conservative groups were sending messages to her friends when she personally didn’t repeat them fast enough.
@ronbyers I hear what you’re saying. Personally, e-mail has (always) seemed to be quite adequate for keeping in touch, including the ability to attach files, links, etc. Guess I’m just old-fashioned.
Zero sympathy for the “victims” of this “breach”. Folks, the entire reason FB exists is to mine the data YOU willingly provide and sell it for massive profits. It’s the FRIGGIN’ BUSINESS MODEL!! If you have a FB account, everything you post there should be considered public info, even if the TOS says there’s some degree of privacy. Everyone knows the old saying about “the three biggest lies”, well there’s now a 4th: “Your Private Facebook Information Won’t Be Sold”. Delete your account or stop whining about it when FB does exactly what it’s in business to do.
The researcher downloaded the data from FB and kept the files. He was supposed to just use the data within FB. FB told him to delete the data, he didn’t, violating whatever agreement they had. Then Cambridge got ahold of it from him (can’t remember how) and gamed out manipulating people via the bots, etc., the illegality being foreign $, etc.
No. You’re just not lazy.
There’s something going on with FB with these errant posts. Yesterday mine posted a recipe from a year ago. Other friends have said on FB that they didn’t post something that has showed up on their feed.
@squirreltown Can I quote you on this? I have a targeted audience of one for this message. (She’s not on TPM, but does use FB for both business and “social” media purposes.)
The thing is we are all victims of this breach. Even those of us that are not on FB. All of us that have been damaged since the election.
