Trump’s base doesn’t care what he says (or does) so long as they are convinced that African Americans will remain second class citizens and Mexicans won’t overrun Texas or Arizona under his presidency. Trump’s base is the same base that has been the GOP base ever since Reagan. Stone cold racists.
I hate to pile on, and I agree with you that Tierney Sneed is a great writer. But this article is surprisingly full of mistakes and missing words. Like this:
while his campaign aides say his policy on mass deportation is “to be determined” and coming in a major immigration that’s already been postponed.
I think that’s supposed to be “major immigration speech that’s already been postponed.”
Perhaps there should be a TPM volunteer copy editing pool…
Repeated appearances on a network TV program (or any regularly repeated TV program, commercial or film) cause a deep, emotional rapport with the viewer, the longer the exposure the deeper the rapport. Some were stymied initially by Trump’s overly emotive face and odd gestures in the primary debates where candidates are usually more demure. But, Trump has always been talking to his TV fans through his Apprentice character. And, while I’ve never watched the program, I’ll bet dollars to donuts that every pose, arm jab or facial mugging to a close up camera is straight off the weekly prime time program.
This is why core supporters accept every wiggle. They buy the TV illusion. They feel, deep down, they know Donald.
Lies! David Duke is happily running in Louisiana!
It would be funny if taking the Breitbart guy on as campaign [insert role here] right before this awkwardness resulted in the Breitbart site being shunned by these extremists.
I love this double-edged sword that the orange asshole campaign has forged. If he changes his stance, he loses the white supremacists and possibly factions of his die-hards. If he stays with the racist rhetoric, he loses any chance at anyone else. Talk about mopping yourself into a corner.
Hey, at least the CEO of Breitbart is there to help him out of this
Enjoying this, greatly,

You would think that with all the traffic TPM is now getting, the site could afford to hire a few editors. Josh Marshall’s essays are typically rife with missing or inappropriately placed words. Certainly the essays can be delayed five minutes while an editor applies needed corrections.
Brimelow followed up in emails Thursday that the “campaign is obviously in chaos,” but he was optimistic Trump would return to his old [libertine] ways.
[Fixed]
As long as confusion reigns supreme he will have supporters. It’s a cult after all.
Extremists Begin To Howl Over Trump’s Erractic Lurching On Immigration
This headline is outrageous. The right wing extremists, neo-Nazis and white Supremacists supporting Trump are not dogs or wolves. They do not howl. They are living breathing human beings who just happen to be idiots.
Soften is dog whistle for flaccid…
This is the main reason there is no Prime membership in my future.
Josh frequently advertises on the site for this role or another, but copy editing is never among them.
Stay on this one, Tierney…because its going to get much, much uglier in the coming days. My bet is that within a week, Trump is disavowing all of this “softer” stuff completely, and Kellyanne is taken out back of the woodshed and we start seeing Bannon doing the talking head interviews.
I used to have a Samoyed, who never barked…howling was how he communicated. And he was completely fearless, he knew everyone was going to be his next best friend (and he wasn’t wrong).
Anyway, one Fourth of July, we went to a party a friend of mine had as his place on the water. It was always big deal, lots of kegs, started early in the day and of course…lots of rednecks.
So by the time we got there, it was about what you would expect. When the fireworks started, my Samoyed (Loki) of course took off running to the edge of the pier to howl at them (afraid of nothing). Well, these drunk rednecks thought that was the greatest thing they had ever seen or heard. So sure enough, they all start howling along with him. I of course just grinned and say “that’s my boy, leading the pack”
So…these people do indeed howl. I have seen and heard it firsthand
Poor, poor whining tittybabies…sobbing little whining tittybabies. The Donald knows you stupid and duped fools aren’t going anywhere and he needs to expand his mob. So Donny’s “softening” is just a ploy which won’t work…but his Alt Right new campaign strategy has now taken over and will give those ‘mushy middle’ voter a new & improved tRump! So SHADDUP…losers.
Ann Coulter and Donny discuss immigration…and then…“The Softening.” SAD!
I saw that on Lawrence O’Donnell last night. Have never seen Glen Beck so calm and…well…partly…just a little… sensible. When Glen said to Lawrence that the conservatives and liberals have to get together and save the country I nearly spit my ice tea out. After digesting that comment for a moment I realized hell really has frozen over.
One of the most bizarre flip flops yet! He’s actually now touting Jeb Bush’s immigration proposals, proposals he excoriated as “nothing,” “weak,” “useless,” “same as Obama’s plan” during the debates. And now YamMan’ makes them his own…OH!..until he addresses his immigration-obsessed and howling hate filled Trumpanzees’ at the next rally and then he’ll tell them he never said this and is “…going to build a wall and send em’ all back.” …and they will cheer and bask in the glow of Hair Furor.
SSDD
I detest Ted Cruz, but his analysis of Trump was so spot on: "Donald will say one thing in the morning, something else in the afternoon and contradict both of his earlier statements in the evening. And he could pass a lie detector test on what he’s said because he’s such a pathological liar that he believes what he says each time he says it."
Some of them…but now, to hold that position, even they have to admit…Trump is a liar; straight up, no ifs, ands or buts.
And once they swallow that pill…it put them in a precarious place when asked “so what else is he lying to you about?”
I can’t wait until Trump attempts a mid rally animal sacrifice for the fevered throng…but, a chicken, rabbit? Something larger?
Joy Ann Reid could not stop laughing on O’Donnell last night every time Lawrence said, “The softening of Trump”. Too funny.
