Discussion: Expert:

The Oklahoma city bombing by McVeigh. The Knoxville church shooting. Tiller’s murder by Roeder. The Popwalski Pittsburgh police shooting. The Holocaust Museum shooting. The Wisconsin Sikh temple shootings. The pizza parlor assassination of two cops in Las Vegas. Brian Smith and his friend Kyle David Joekel were involved in the shooting of two sheriff’s deputies in Louisiana in 2012. Both were members of the sovereign citizens movement. The Dylann Roof church massacre. All were done by right wingers. More than a few were stopped in the planning stage by the FBI. So yeah, right wing terrorism is an issue. I left out the Muslim students who were gunned down last year in North Carolina. I think that guy was just a nut case.

As long as you brought up the writing and its lack of clarity, shall we talk about the headline? Just off the top of my head and pre-caffeine, I’d suggest, "Charleston type attacks. . . ", or "police worry more about Charleston-type attacks. . . " because the first glance read is there’s something likeable going on

“If you just kept up with the news, you would get the misimpression that violent extremism is one of the leading threats to public safety in this country,” Kurzman told TPM. “Whereas the numbers suggest that’s not the case.”

Great, tell that to all those too terrorized to vote, or be out and about in their own cities, or to the families of the Oklahoma terror attack.

He contradicts his earlier findings that RIGHT WING terrorist activities are MORE of a concern to national law enforcement than Islamic terrorism.

Exactly, and most cops vote Republican, so I doubt there’s much “liberal bias” in their worries.

You’re wrong about Obama, and this won’t be the first time you’ll hear an objection to your “strong submissions.” This president and the First Lady have been the object of some of the most vile, racist insults ever leveled at the occupants of the White House including calling it a black house. He has in fact pursued issues involving racial injustice and when he does he’s subject to hateful anonymous replies from the right including comparisons to apes. As to gun control, his administration pressed Congress to pass some gun control measures after Newtown, and they wouldn’t. One can tell from his demeanor when he addresses the latest incident of shootings that he understands how he has failed in persuading this intransigent Congress to cooperate. The Executive Branch does not do anything alone. It needs the cooperation and support of the legislature, but this Congress is content to do anything but get themselves reelected. Those who make our laws can will never again discuss gun control, and they will never discuss racial equality…

I disagree with only your personal observation on BHO.
Per the progress we’ve made on racism.
We have only begun to make progress on racism during BHO’s 2 terms in office.

Racism was a hidden and accepted aspect of our society until recently.
That the cauldron of racism now bubbles at the surface-- instead of just beneath-- means that pervasive and institutional racism is being made plain to a huge segment of our society that once could ignore it.

When a society is forced to witness and face up to the worst of it’s behaviors?
To me means we’re closer to changing the long-time acceptance of racism in the public sphere.

The POTUS is both a catalyst for change-- by virtue of being elected twice-- and-- between a rock-and-a-hard-place to effect further change too swiftly based on his race.

I want change. I don’t want violence.
Certainly not more widespread than what we’re seeing (see Bonvivant’s partial list upthread).
And further stoking of delusional RWNJs would be the wrong tactic presently IMHO.

This one will not disappear like Sandy Hook.
This is not a mentally ill loner.
This is a confirmed white supremacist.
A RWNJ US flag-burner.

It is THE conflict that the MSM could only dream of–
heading into the POTUS-primary season.

BHO chicken?
Only in a simplistic context.
This situation is anything but simple.

But Cruz is going to return the $8500. campaign donation from the Council of Conservative Citizens, a hate group, so it’s good. But will Santorum and Paul, or King of Iowa.

This is a link to a breakdown to how various professions vote by party. Scroll down and you’ll see law enforcement is evenly divided by party, but from their actions lately and how they pursue African Americans with lethal force it’d be easy to assume what party they identify with.

Really?

Have you looked at all the posting by the usual right wing trolls blaming this on the left and calling Roof a “liberal” because he burned the American flag?

Meanwhile, you have the right-wing politicians and the right-wing media’s constant spewing of hate 24/7.

Then they are all, what? I didn’t do/say anything to cause this.

you’re taking over our country and you have to go

This phrase, uttered by the murderer, is standard sotto to sopra voce GOP boilerplate, has been for a while and would be recognized as such by most anyone.

I’m sure this will make Lindsey Graham’s head explode.

Krugman has pretty good editorial on this very question. His view is that we have made some progress, but racism is what animates our unwillingness to help the poor.

Technically Islamic extremism is also a type of right wing violence… Islamic extremists are not liberal - they are very conservative.

FLOAT ME A CONFEDERATE FLAG…

The President of the US is wrong and you are right, that is pretty damned presumptuous of you. He is in the know more than you obviously can conceive. Because racism is in the headlines all of a sudden doesn’t mean that it’s increased, it means that Obama is more than the hateful racists can bear and keep quiet about. These aren’t brand new racists that just learned to hate since '08. This is the old guard that pops up when they feel that the blacks might actually be getting somewhere in America and that is what the Obama administration represents.

How can Obama be out of touch, when basically this reared ugliness is all about him? He’s more in touch I’ll submit then he ever cared to be.

part of what bugs me is Roof’s use of the term last rhodesian. I wouldn’t have thought a moron like that would have known about Rhodesia without some significant guidance from a mentor who was winding him up.

If the cops are the measuring stick that we use and are to believe in, then why aren’t the cops worried about the cops? They are murdering blacks in the streets under the guise of serving the public and protection. Which brings to mind, who are they serving and protecting exactly?

The problem for blacks is, they have to not only be wary of the white supremacist idiots but also the police that are as likely to be on the side of the idiots as they are on the side of the law. They get confused as Muslim and can be accidentally killed in a Muslim attack as any group could. Blacks are stuck in the middle of the worst of all worlds.
