Discussion: Ex-Virginia Cop Charged With Murder For Killing Unarmed Man In Doorway Of His Home

Discussion for article #239509

Sad. Some people just do not do the “cop” thing very well. And it does not help that the training in America seems to be: assume everyone is armed and ready to kill you.

we defianetly need to be seeing a lot more of police officers being held accountable for their actions… if it were so in the beginning we wouldn’t be seeing so many young men and women dieing

This podcast is fantastic. It’s Joe Rogan and an ex-cop, Michael Wood, discussing the current state of the police, the tactics they use and the training they get (or, rather, don’t get) and how this leads to a lot of problems. Really worth listening to if you don’t mind amping up the frustration and anger at how bad things actually are.

I don’t get it.

A. Guns are legal, sacred, sacrosanct and above reproach; see Amendment, Second.
B. Guns were invented for killing people; see China, circa 1200.
Given A and B, it only stands to reason that it should be OK to use guns to kill people.

The guy just needs a better lawyer.

The problem is that when conducting job interviews with prospective police officers, the interviewers rarely ask, “Are you by any chance a racist, a psychopath, or a racist psychopath?”

It really should be a standard question.

Cops ought to regularly be tested for steroid use. I’m willing to bet that was the case in this shooting.

Cops should just be taken their guns away. Seems to work fine in the UK.

Another question should be “will you assure us that you’ll say you feared for your life (gun in waistband) thus ensuring a slap on the wrist after killing someone?”

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — A former Fairfax County police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man as he stood inside his front door with his hands up in 2013 was indicted Monday on a second-degree murder charge, authorities said.

and yet in Cleveland,Ferguson and Staten Island…

“In April, the county agreed to settle the civil lawsuit for nearly $3 million, the largest in Virginia history in connection with a police shooting.”

I’m glad the family didn’t stop with the money and are still pursuing charges for this man.

“Torres told investigators he thought Geer might have a weapon hidden in his waist.”

He THOUGHT he might have a weapon hidden in his waist! So he shot him.

Whew!

Cleveland had an extensive investigation including outside people coming in, and charges are expected shortly, as there should be. Judges have recommended charges from murder to negligent homicide, and that is likely to happen.

DOJ did a thorough investigation and determined all actions by Wilson were completely justified, right down to the number of shots, so I am not sure why you are bringing Ferguson up? There in no way should be any charges in that case.

I think you mean Staten Island, not LI, and yes, that was absurd that there were no charges against that cop, I agree.

The charges came two years after the shooting

Realize I’m kinda stating the obvious here, but doesn’t that seem like an awfully long time before charges were even filed?

My thoughts too.

What I find interesting is that this was a white man who was killed and it still took two years to indict. Whether the victim is white or black, the cops protect their own. Add racism to that, it is no wonder that the black community is screaming. As well they should.

The indictment came only after the family had filed a lawsuit against the county.

Pretty sad that it took two years, a Senator, the victim’s family hiring a lawyer and the threat of Federal involvement to get an investigation completed and charges filed (not to mention to get the officer separated from the force).

Reminded me of this:

On Sept. 4, 2015, Levar Edward Jones was stopped by a South Carolina state
trooper in Columbia, S.C., and asked to produce his driver’s license. As Jones
reached inside the open driver’s door of his SUV to retrieve
the license and then turned back toward the trooper, the officer shot at
him four times.“I just got my license! You said get my license!”
Jones, who is black, shouted at Trooper Sean M. Groubert, who is white,
as Jones tumbled to the pavement, wounded by at least one shot.
Groubert, 31, was fired Sept. 19 and charged late Wednesday with felony
assault and battery “of a high and aggravated nature,” according to an
arrest warrant. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.]

My gawwd’! One has to wonder how many of these crazy dangerous Barney Fife-like loose cannons are out there on the thin blue line?
