Discussion: Ex-Reagan Staffer Who Says ACA Saved His Life Confronts Ryan At Town Hall (VIDEO)

Exactly. And, the republicans not having a replacement plan fits right in with that. They did not think they needed one until it impacted them directly.

The House Speaker affirmed that his conference was working on a replacement “right now” that would cover those with pre-existing conditions, like Jeans, without causing the premium increases that have been significant in some states.

While pushing for discredited high-risk pools. Takes a special kind of sociopath to lie like this.

I hope Ryan doesn’t have to go thru what I have. The month I retired I had to get a total knee replacement (surgeon bill $2500 + hospital bill $67,000). Three weeks later I got a diagnosis of cancer and had immediate surgery to have a tumor excised. The costs were picked up by the insurance I had thru my work. But then I was retired…Try to get insurance after something like that. It’s one of many reasons I give thanks for the Medicare I have now.
Like I said i hope Ryan doesn’t have to go tru something personally awful to have his eyes opened to compassion to others.
The GOP has had 6 years to contemplate a replacement to Obamacare. Six years and they only now are grappling with the idea. Six years. Six fucking lazy assed years. Why aren’t democrats pounding their asses over this. The media should be harassing the GOP about this big time.

I used to find that shocking. You know what I find shocking now? The fact that, according to recent polls, half the people in the country don’t even know that the uninsured rate is at an all-time low because of the ACA.

I suspect that a large part of that is pure confirmation bias, with the Fox-Toxxed 26% simply refusing to let that fact through the filter. But first and foremost, what we’re seeing is the fruit of Democrats’ tendency to believe “saying things on news shows and in speeches” is the same thing as marketing and PR.

Because that’s what this is–a massive marketing and PR failure consistent with Democrats’ innate public-sector minded distaste for things like advertising, marketing and PR. Republicans get it at the gut level. They grok the black arts of PR and reductionist sloganeering and messaging. (Case in point: “Stronger Together?” Seriously?) Democrats always want to operate at a more elevated level. They find themselves, time and again, losing an election and sputtering "but, but, but we had the best policies . . . "

Even Obama, whose 2008 campaign was the first Democratic campaign in a long time with a thorough and well executed understanding of marketing, branding and the use of symbols to provoke emotional responses, fell short on the ACA.

They think the idea that you have to sell ideas, not just talk about them thoughtfully, but actually sell like they’re toothpaste or beer, them is icky and gross and beneath them. And now here we are.

Yeah and this is also part of my ongoing campaign to try to get Liberals to quit following those tracks. Quit worrying about being right and worry about selling what you think is right well. We don’t do that. We refuse to appeal to people emotionally and that’s how they are killing us - they exploit the hell out of hot button issues and it works.

Ryan conflates them into a single and repulsive creature.

Sadly, I think that’s a LOT of people in the country, not just Republicans

And I think that’s because the GOP exploits working peoples’ fears of their hard earned money going to support the health care of the lazy and the black.

So many really excellent and thoughtful comments in this thread.

Personally, I just want to thank this guy for saying what he said to Paul Ryan directly. I have no illusions it will change Ryan, but the optics of the confrontation are something we need to see repeated a thousand times over the next few months. As much as policy by anecdote is a bad thing, still people in general and Republicans in particular respond to these stories. It does help to put a face on it.

Ryan lied directly to that persons face. the GOTP is determined to erase the ACA(funny comment, the residents of KY hate Obamacare, but totally love the ACA) because they are determined to not allow anything that Obama wanted to continue-see McConnell’s video comment back in 2008 just after Obama elected- Speaker Ryan also determined to get rid of Medicare by summer.
Privatizing VA health care and then Social Security to follow on.
Seeing as how they got 3 million votes fewer than the loser, that fewer than 50% of registered voters bothered to vote and that the only difference between winner and loser was a few hundred thousand votes over 4 states, then the truth is they have no mandate and they are making no effort to attempt to bring the country back together

YES. It’s human nature to see with blinders, or at least regular practice. Let’s be grateful for open eyes. May they see, and after weeping, look towards more inclusive and constructive action.

No they don’t and they know that. My take on what is going on right now is that they are full steam ahead because they know they are in a situation that is not going to last.

What’s the famous quote from Fox NEWS? “I was on food stamps, and no one gave me any help…”

Jon Stewart summed it up best, “When it’s for someone else, it’s a handout, but when it’s for you, it’s an entitlement…”

People collecting Social Security and Medicare, turning up their nose at Obamacare… It’s a bewildering lack of perspective.

Paul Ryan wasn’t averse to taking financial help from the government in his time of need either.

I totally agree with what you said. And I think people should tone down the criticism and encourage more people to speak out. A person who admits his mistake has more courage than a person who thinks he’s always right. We should welcome them instead of pushing them out.

Too bad he wasn’t able to avail himself of a “death panel”.

I’ve had Type 1 diabetes for most of my life. I use an insulin pump, NovoLog insulin and a continuous glucose monitor. I’m approaching retirement age. Medicare already doesn’t cover CGMs, and getting them to cover an insulin pump isn’t exactly straightforward. The legislation just passed drops the pre-existing condition protection and this fuckhead wants to punt Medicare in all but name and send me a voucher. WTF am I going to do with that? I’m looking at having to go back to the R/NPH insulin regimen, state-of-the-art when I was diagnosed over 30 years ago, the only stuff I could possibly afford OTC now that standard human-analog insulins are up in the $300-500/vial range and trending north rapidly. I was on that crap for twenty years–the Eat Now or DIE! insulins–and getting off of it was like being released from prison.

“Scared shitless” is not too strong for what I’m feeling in general. “Fuck you” is nowhere near strong enough for what I feel about Ryan.
