Discussion: Ex-Okla. Volunteer Deputy Sentenced To 4 Years For Fatally Shooting Man

What about the poor guy he shot while “playing” police officer? Four years seems a little light.

You couldn’t be more correct.

Yeah, most black folks get 30 to life for shooting an unarmed, already restrained man to death. Of course, race has “nothing to do with this” light sentence.

Bull !!!

what do you suppose the proper amount of time is for Governor Fallin to issue a full pardon?

‘after all… it’s not like he was caught using the wrong bathroom’ Gov Fallin

After the next election cycle, I guess, Thanksgiving or so? No one will notice, or maybe on Christmas Eve. It’s a “Christian” thing to do.

I’m guessing it’ll be the first time he catches a cold… he’s old and in frail health and it’s the humanitarian thing to do… also restoring his voting rights and gun rights…

Actions have consequences!

The other guy got death, you got four years…of which, how many is he actually going to serve?

Among other things, the investigations revealed an internal memo questioning Bates’ qualifications as a volunteer deputy and showed that Bates, a close friend of the sheriff’s, had donated thousands of dollars in cash, vehicles and equipment to the sheriff’s office.

Something is wrong when police departments have to resort to taking donations from wealthy benefactors, or worse, outright taking cash and valuables from innocent people they stop for spurious reasons.

I, for one, would be happy to pay more in taxes for more professional police departments so that they don’t have to shill for dollars and will also behave more even handedly with their community.

“This is a terrible injustice for a man that made a terrible mistake in a split second,”

No way … this is exactly what the guy had been preparing himself to do for years, and the stoopid finally took control. Fortunately, the judge recognized this.

And more important, he made a terrible mistake in a split second that killed someone, when the whole point of being allowed to be armed and play cop is that you don’t make mistakes like that. Why should “sh*t happens” apply only to the dead black guy?

Seems about right to me. I’d like to see justice for all the other individuals who allow this type of questionable practice to exist. Seems corrupt to the core.

He certainly was ‘a threat and a danger’ to Mr. Harris. That said, it’s nice to see that times have changed enough that rich, old, connected white guys are being held accountable for their behavior more often than in the past. This dude and Denny Hastert come to mind.

Although 4 years may seem lax, for a man of his age, those four years will be the longest of his life, and possibly his last.

“I’m very remorseful for what happened,” is right up there with I apologize if anyone felt offended. Four years is not enough time.

The answer is, of course, MOAR GUNZ!

How about some jail time for the idiots who put him out there with a gun?

A wannabe like this poor old fool who makes a fatal mistake has no extenuating circumstances. He should have gotten life without parole.

Bates, himself, should have recognized that he had no business playing cops and robbers with real guns and real bullets.
