Reading TPM is like taking a daily multiple vitamin of negative Obama stories. Today’s dose is Mike Hayden. WTF is up with TPM? When did Josh Marshall become such a Republican apologist. It is not very becoming.
I have met Michael Hayden.
He is completely focused on attack. Which is probably why his concern for data security when he was at the NSA was so negligent that there were two major breaches following.
He strikes me as the type of General whose patriotism is absolute. The type of General whose patriotism might lead them to organize a coup to protect the country from enemies within.

Firstly, air power is effective if your aim is containment rather than overthrow. It was actually working quite well against Saddam before Bush’s puppeteers decided to invade instead.
Secondly, and more importantly, we’re not proposing to just bomb and leave it at that. We’re offering air support for the local forces, who have to do their own job in retaking territory (and, in the case of the Kurds, they’ve already done exactly that in key places, saving thousands of lives).
Given that we opened the door for ISIS with the ludicrously needless '03 invasion, I think we owe local forces some help, no?

Uhhh…no. We tried to prepare those local forces to take care of their own country, and they ran like rabbits and turned over the weapons we provided to them to this faction.
We’ve already killed over a hundred thousand of them to “bring them freedom,” and killed and maimed thousands of our own. We peppered the countryside with depleted uranium that’s causing birth defects. We spent trillions of dollars we don’t have. Enough is enough.
This is madness. We definitely caused this problem, unfortunately, we definitely cannot fix it in spite of our accountability.
Unless of course by “we” you mean putting Dubya back into his flight suit and sending Rummy in an unarmored Humvee because we go to war with the army who deserves it. Put Richard Pearle in desert camo and Paul Wolfowitz can lick his comb in Baghdad. I’d be all for that.
But my support ends with the militarization of the PNAC signatories, their war criminal supporters in the Bush administration, and the sons and daughters of the oil tycoons who would use these gruesome beheadings as an excuse to once again turn our military into hegemonic mercenaries while they still pay no taxes.
