For what it’s worth, last September or so Jill Abramson was the guest at a live taping of Slate’s Trumpcast! podcast that I attended. When asked right off the bat about the just pre-election “all clear” story on Trump, she launched into an insanely protective defense of the newspaper. (The questioner was former Times reporter Virginia Heffernan, btw, and amounted to “what was up with THAT?”).
Frankly I was surprised that someone who had actually been fired from the editor position there would be so knee-jerk in her reaction to a truly legitimate question from a non-hostile source. She wasn’t even at the paper when it happened. To be fair she did calm down about it after a while and sounded much more thoughtful and less “how dare you question the Times!”.
To be fair I’m going off my memory of an event not far from a year distant. Maybe if I listen to that episode I’ll have a different impression. But my first thought upon seeing her criticize the paper’s handling of this matter was, wow. That’s a big deal for her.
Criticism and feedback helps us do better work and we’re always open to it.
I am so sick of hearing this from the NYT. It seems like we’ve heard it dozens of times in the last few years. We’ve heard it every time they’ve pandered to the deplorables (even though what little reading the deplorables does not involve the NYT), engaged in both siderism, and published stories that amplify the right’s propaganda (like working with the author of Clinton Cash, whatever his name is).
I’m pretty much the same, but it’s down to just Blow and occasionally Krugman. I also have a subscription to their recipe site. I ain’t giving that up.
None of our media institutions are honest. They’re all (all 7 or 8 corporations) owned and and run by the UBER RICH, working to make the United States into a failed country, a totalitarian state.
And they’re winning.
What the Dem party and most liberals can’t seem to see, even though it is directly in front of us, is that we’ve been AT WAR with totalitarian Fascism for decades. There will be no “cooperation” or “working together” with the GOP. The GOP=Russia.
The US no longer has a “two party” political system; what we have are vicious criminals (Russian Gov’t, Murdoch, Kochs & Mercers etc, Oil companies, Wall Street, MEDIA, waging war on the United States:
The Times is one of our splurges. We take it daily and on the West Coast, that costs. My husband walks off to the health club with the paper version and so I often end up reading it online.
