Discussion: Ex-FEC Chair: Ted Cruz's Birth Issue Is A Closer Call Than John McCain's Was

Well, if Cruz would just announce that his Vice-Presidential pick would be both Palin sisters, Brewster and Twiggy, then he’d be doubly good.

Knowing how many Americans are born abroad to U.S. citizen parents makes me a little unhappy that this issue would be resolved against Cruz, on the one hand, but on the other – I have difficulty believing that Karmic justice could possibly be so perfect – that Cruz would not be able to become president on the basis that he is insufficiently American.

McCain enjoys shitting in Cruz’s gaping pie hole.

One way to resolve this is to cut taxes on the rich and ease firearms regulations.

Nope. He was granted citizenship at birth through his mother’s citizenship, regardless of his place of birth. What other interpretation could there be of “natural-born citizen”? This is just a distraction from the fact that everyone hates him for what he is, not his citizenship claims.

Hmmm…the fact that this is an ex-FEC Chair highlights an important question: does all of Cruz’s fundraising activity become fraudulent and violate all sorts of laws and FEC regulations if he’s not eligible?

I think there’d be a real problem with proving anything intentional in light of the fact that the question of eligibility and what is meant by “natural born” is admittedly muddy, but some laws and regs can be “strict liability” or may require something less than knowing/willful/intentional wrongdoing. Anyone familiar with the ones that might apply?

The irony of this issue now coming back to haunt one of their own is just too delicious for words. It is looking more and more like citizenship issue is a real problem for Cruz,

I’d prefer it to be definitively resolved in Cruz’s favor. I’d also prefer the term “natural born” be struck from the Constitution.

Of course, I’m only human so I too enjoy the Karmic aspect to this whole dust-up. Hopefully, Cruz can get a sweetheart loan from Goldman Sachs to cover his legal fees on this one.

We also need to talk about all those unborn natural born citizens who will never be given the chance to run for president because of Planned Parenthood.

I’d prefer to see it as a manifestation of the fact that everyone hates him for what he is. His citizenship is irrelevant.

The whole “birth” debate actually goes back (like everything else it seems with this lot) to the Nixon crew…They wanted the wild and crazy guy Kissinger to run after Nixon and in the 70’s there was a push about changing the rules and all just for that purpose

So like everything else eh - we’re forever cursed to fight the battles of the boomers and their parents before we’ll be allowed to have a country

this is just so hilariously awesome… i have never witnessed a more awesome display of karma… even if it rebounds in his favor, just to have him go thru this makes my day. and at some point, those moronic voters of his who aren’t even aware he was born in canada, might experience this little bit of information seeping thru… just imagine the crushing disappointment… lol

Googling “What goes around comes around” would probably get you ‘Ted Cruz’ as the ten top hits.

The ol’ drip, drip, drip…

Surprised (in part) that Republicans aren’t approaching this issue the way they approach voter fraud. Where it is safer to deny a person the ability to vote rather than to let them vote and catch them in an actual crime.
Even though the tiniest number of US (natural-born) citizens can ACTUALLY become President, it would still make sense from their perspective to limit the people who could even enter the race.
Note that about 150 million people are eligible to be President. You are more likely to be bitten by a shark and definitely more likely to be struck by lightning.

There is also the story that his Mother may have been registered to vote in Canada, making her a Canadian Citizen. In any case I’m enjoying seeing this asshole get some back at him for once.

The problem is that there are unanswered questions about whether or not his mother renounced her American citizenship when she took the oath of Canadian citizenship. According to some people, the Canadian oath she would have had to recite at the time included a phrase specifically renouncing citizenship of other countries.

Bingo.

What bluestatedon said. Given his mother’s name on the list of Canadian voters, the presumption must be that the government document is correct, and not the other way around. The burden is therefore on Cruz to show not only that he was a citizen at birth, but also that he and his entire family have not been living in the US illegally for the past several decades.
