I was in Paris 9/11/2001 apartment hunting.

Flew out of LaGuardia 9/10/2001ā€¦ glimpsed the Statue of Liberty as we flew in from Houston Hobby.

Unaware of the WTC, until afternoon in Paris. In elevator at hotel, the French guests offered condolences.

The metropolitan banlieus are a massive powder keg waiting to explode. Unknown to tourists, hidden and ignored by a succession of French governments, and occasionally portrayed by French film makers (e.g. ā€œLa Haineā€). A half century of perceived and actual disrespect is fertile ground for home-grown terrorism.

Yes, well at least Bush got bin Laden, brought stability to Afghanistan, eliminated the existential threat posed by Iraqā€™s WMDs, and brought democracy to the Middle East. Oh waitā€¦
