Discussion: EU Grants Six-Month Delay Of Brexit

Six months will go by faster than Theresa May can say “%^#$$#.”

Six months from now… Theresa May who?

So the British need to participate in the May European Parliament elections now, right? What a clusterfuck.

I’ll bet you all a shiny internet nickel that Brexit D-Day will now never come.

It seems like it’s been obvious for some time.

Nobody actually seems to want it to happen. Including the people driving the double-decker bus. They just don’t want to admit it.

The EU are being extra generous and patient with the Brits (soon to be called English again). I would have kicked them out.

This has pretty much gone the way that I expected following what the EU has been saying over the past 4 weeks. The EU had signaled a few weeks ago that they would extend the Brexit date provided that May agreed to participate in the EU elections. That happened this week. The EU also left itself wiggle room to extend the date further. This ends an important and dreadful chapter in the Brexit saga.

Theresa May’s insane and quixotic attempt to use the original Brexit date as a hard date to leverage a game of brinksmanship to force Parliament to back her deal is now dead.

With more Tories now favoring a confirmatory referendum, a leadership change and even a new election, I think things will move in a very different direction. Hard Brexiteers took a big hit as May finally went against them (but only because she didn’t have the votes in Parliament for her plan which was equally hated).

The opportunity now exists for Jeremy Corbyn to get his wayward 25 or 30 pro-Brexit members aligned to now favor a path that includes going back to the people. Labour has a real chance to win the next election if they support a flexible path that includes a people’s vote. For some reason, some 20-30 Labour members are unable to see the strong position that Labour has before them.

The good news for Britain is that the rule of law and the will of Parliament still mean something. The will of the EU Council also means something. The bad news is that a majority of the Conservative party is in thrall to nutty racist extremists (MAGA w/better grammar and diction) who will cause as much havoc as possible unless the 1/3rd or so of somewhat normal Tories break ranks and go where public opinion is. There have been more signs of that in recent weeks, but frankly, the UK media have been terrible. They have given the Brexiteers an outsized voice because Rupert Murdoch hates Brussels and finds a Brexited UK much easier to manipulate for his ends.

I haven’t understood Labour’s position throughout this mess and assumed that the problem is that I barely know enough about British politics to be Trumpp’s advisor on the topic.

To me, it see!a that voters have seen clearly that the benefits of Credit were greatly oversold, that the negotiating position of Britain is far weaker than voters were told, and that Credit creates some major problems or which the leave side has no workable solution.

But, then I think about the mess in our own country and remind .myself that seeing a better course is a he’ll of a lot easier than changing course.

I’m already planning my Brexit Halloween costume.
