Discussion: Ethics Office Rejects WH Attempt To Block Disclosure Of Ethics Waivers

What does Drumpf and Ethics have in common?

Each are comprised of 6 letters. That’s about it!

Silly Shaub! Don’t you know the lobbyists and Trump signed non-disclosure agreements to protect themselves in case of a criminal investigation?

You will when Trump’s lawyers get to your complaint with Trumpian efficiency … around Halloween

The Ethics Office may want to rethink this request for all the waivers. If Hair Führer pushes through the budget cuts he wants they won’t have the money to buy enough file cabinets to hold them all.

Good for Shaub.

He needs to keep up the pressure on the Trumpists.

What a little weasel Mulvaney is turning out to be. Kiss off Mick.

He’s never been anything else.

And he’s showing us how proud he is of being a total dick.

Senator Grassley, the White House for you on line one

He also noted that Congress supports giving OGE access to the waivers, citing a 2009 letter from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) urging the Obama administration to disclose to the public waivers granted to former lobbyists.

No doubt we will be hearing that Grassley's position on this issue has "evolved".

Because black guy.

Director Walter Shaub Jr.

How long until he is fired?

Hey, I have a deal: if OGE isn’t allowed to see the waivers (and apparently no one else outside with executive branch is either) then it’s pretty clear the waivers don’t actually exist. Let the prosecutions commence.

Obviously, the administration will stonewall. Next step—court?
Seems like this could play out for several years.

Why would Mulvaney be involved in this? Wouldn’t this be the purview of the White House counsel?

Short of impeachment there’s not much anyone can do to force Trump’s hand on any of this, at least in a time frame that results in some sort of action or sanctions that occur during his term. Unless something lands in SCOTUS’ lap on an expedited track he will undoubtedly ignore other court rulings and appeal, appeal, appeal. Congressional GOPers will plead he’s doing damage down ticket, but he’ll counter polls show his base LOVES the fact he’s giving the middle finger to all involved in their “witch hunt”.
I’ve said it here before, he walks. On all of it. Our institutions are designed to remove a sitting President only under the most extreme conditions. Footsie with Putin doesn’t fall into that category. Nor do election hijinks. With Republicans election hijinks are a feature, not a bug. You no more punish them for their commission than you would a dog for chasing a squirrel. It’s what they do.

I think it’s too early to say that he “walks”, but I agree that wresting the office from him will be extremely difficult.
I would say that it would take exposing his children’s crimes to make this something Republicans would even contemplate.

Ivanka is his weak link. The two boys and Jared would get tossed in the boar pit if it meant saving his hide. I suspect were Ivanka’s neck on the block he might cut a deal.

Ethics? Trump? His administration? That’s hilarious!!

That’s one hell of a letter! Love the footnotes with the legal citations. Kudos to whoever wrote it – it’s a masterpiece.

So much to be happy about in this short little article. Foremost, of course, is the refreshing sight of a (very) civil servant steadfastly insisting on doing what is right, for the sake of holding the government accountable to us, its citizens.

Then there’s the restrained-but-pointed nature of the response. To anyone versed in bureaucratese, a phrase like “the unusual nature of your letter” clearly translates to “what the FLAMING FUCK are you thinking”.

And the masterstroke, turning past GOP language (from a different, and ahem, darker administration, of course) back on them.

It is good to see that we still have courageous spirits like Director Shaub.
