Discussion: Ethical Criticisms Of Sean Penn's Drug Kingpin Interview Roll In

Discussion for article #244512

Complaining that Penn’s interview is not “journalism” is like complaining that Fox News isn’t “news.” It is what it is.

Meanwhile, these same people and the entire Amurikkkan “journalism” industry obsequiously massage our politicians’ genitals in order to avoid making them angry and thereby lose “access”…

What. A. Fucking. Joke.

They got scoooped and they’re throwing a hissy. End of story.

Are these people so utterly devoid of self-awareness that they fail to realize that the entire public believes that every single MSM “news” outlet in this country does nothing BUT try to curry favor with those about whom they are reporting, particularly politicians who are running for re-election and therefore control and represent massive amounts of potential campaign advertising revenue? In fact, when are we going to see a study showing just how much “favorable coverage” is correlated to how much that politician’s campaign and PACs are spending on a particular network or publication? Everyone knows it’s a fucking farce, particularly after watching “news” outlets fold like deck chairs in the face of the RNC or its candidates threatening to take away “access” and ad revenue.

Really? It sounds like pretty much every bit of MSM interaction with the GOP I’ve seen in my adult life.

"“An understanding was brokered with the subject that this piece would be submitted for the subject’s approval before publication.” So how is this anything different than what the entire Washington press corps does? Or any modern news outlet now a days?

Sure, I mean it might not be a reporter calling Politician Smith and saying “here’s the story I’m gonna run, take a look and make any changes” but the news outlet damn well has “An Understanding” that if it pisses Politician Smith off it won’t get access to Politician Smith anymore and that’s all media outlet care about is ‘acesses’.

Yea, I’m supposed get ‘outraged’ over this, while ABC punishes a small paper for basically not running it’s stories by Trump for his approval.

Journalistic jealousy rearing its ugly head.

Most of what passes for the news in MSM isn’t solid news reporting, like calling the armed thugs in Oregon militiamen. It was better than most of what I read that passes as “journalism” this past weekend. Jealousy is so unbecoming. Why didn’t any of these complainer put their ass on the line and try to interview the madman El Chapo?

Interesting that their concern is the baseline rules for the interview, and not that the interview actually occurred-which appears to be Fox New’s hobbyhorse today.

And I agree with those who’ve already expressed their belief that granting final approval to “big gets” is already par for the course.

How quickly the “media” ignored the hulabaloo regarding the Nevada newspaper that was purchased by Adelson, a billionaire in, an overt action to control media in that State but complain about Penn’s article. Is it about trashing RS?

Wait a minute, I’m confused! are we talking about Sean Penn and El Chapo or CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, FOX NEWS, ABC, NBC, CBS and their arrangements with the GOP debate clowns.

I wonder, did Mike Allen garner the same level of outrage for his interview ground rules?

Politico reporter Mike Allen on Monday downplayed his attempt to offer Chelsea Clinton a "relaxed" interview, and instead chalked it up to a "clumsy" email he wrote.

A 2013 email trail showed that Allen told Clinton aide Philippe Reines that ***if Chelsea Clinton agreed to an interview, the questions would be pre-screened.*** Allen said his offer amounted to a "no risk" interview opportunity for Clinton.

I’ll enthusiastically concede every criticism every person here has made of the media, and of the state of most journalism today. That said, what Rolling Stone did is not journalism. Period. When you give the subjects the right to disapprove things they don’t like you’re doing public relations. Period. And this is not about informing the public. It’s celebrity murderer voyeurism.

As you and @AjayKalra alluded to, my first thought was, Do they not remember the Bush years?

The whole White House press room was told no follow ups and to avoid certain issues, or be ejected or never to be called on again.

After Judith Miller, they NYT lost all credibility. The whole news industry allowed Bush to testify for one lousy hour with Cheney in the room whispering the answers, and did nothing to condemn it.

I could go on and on but…

So…‘real’ jounalists would have done it differently if they had the balls and/or money to get the interview themselves. Got it.
