Discussion: ESPN Suspends Panelist For 1 Week Over Domestic Violence Comments

Discussion for article #225698

Ryan said you would be back tommorrow(7-30-2014) on the radio,I
guess we will see.

Itā€™s nice to see ESPN react so swiftly to inane and inflammatory gibberish from a talking head. I wish there was equally swift retribution when a GOTP demagogue promotes idiocy like this guy.

ā€œI ventured beyond the scope of our discussion by alluding to a womanā€™s role in such heinous matters, going so far as to use the word ā€˜provokeā€™ in my diatribe,ā€ Smith said. ā€œMy words came across that it is somehow a womanā€™s fault. This was not my intent.

Thatā€™s nobodyā€™s idea of an apology, thatā€™s just two dollar wordplay.

Heā€™ll probably use this free time to beat his wife for sassing back.

Does this guy know what the word ā€œdiatribeā€ actually means? Somehow, I doubt it.

He has a history of these comments, and now itā€™s catching up to him, in the form of a slap on the wrist.

And he sounds pretty similar to certain segments of our political landscape who keep insisting that their problem was how they framed things, and not the underlying belief.

ā€œI didnā€™t mean to say women deserved to be beaten. That was inexpertly put, and if people could just understand what I really mean, which is bitches should just stop provoking us, they wouldnā€™t be upset with me.ā€

Same cluelessness, different day.

He seems to not understand that words have meaning and that itā€™s the meaning created by his choice of words that caused the problem. Remarkable behavior for someone who gets paid to talk at people on TV.

P.S. Sorry if my comment to you last night was harsh.

Bob Raissman of the NY Daily News is reporting that Smith is on his way to Sirius/XM and to his own show on the Mad Dog Channel. The Mad Dog Channel is run by former CBS Radio/WFAN-AM sports host Christopher ā€œMad Dogā€ Russo who for nearly 20 years co-hosted the Mike and the Mad Dog program with Mike Francesa.

Not enough. You canā€™t fix stupid with a one-week suspension. Public shaming & repeated abject apologies might do more.

I understand, They set our hair on fire with their reporting, and we respond accordingly to them and sometimes to each other. It happens.

Of course it is when you truncate his words to fit your argument. What Smith went on to say was, ā€œTo say what I actually said is foolish, is an understatement. To say I was wrong is obvious. To apologize, to say that Iā€™m sorry, frankly doesnā€™t do the matter its proper justice, to be quite honest. But I do sincerely apologize.ā€

He then went on to detail his upbringing with a mother and four older sisters and how he had failed them with his comments. ā€œUnfortunately,ā€ he continued, ā€œI did an incredibly poor job of asserting my point of view this past Friday, and for that, again, I am truly truly sorry.ā€ That was not even the end. He made further detailed apologies to the victims of such abuse.

You know, I do not like Stephen A. Smith, but the bitterness and misquoting has to fucking stop. If you accept the notion of apologies, I canā€™t imagine what you want to hear. It seems like you are unwilling to accept anything short of bloodletting.

This guy is not the President, not an elected official, and is, in fact, a person of negligible importance in the larger scheme of things. His words were stupid but they were not earth-shattering in any way. He recognizes he fucked up, and while you can act as cynical as you want ā€“ based on nothing but your innate cynicism (rather than anything factual) ā€“ I prefer to accept this apology and move on. Holding grievances doesnā€™t do you any favors, trust me.

He knows how to use a thesaurus, thatā€™s for sure.

I donā€™t want anything from. . . whatā€™s name, Stephen Smith? And I certainly donā€™t want to be berated for off-hand remarks I made by someone who doesnā€™t know me and more importantly from someone I donā€™t know. That would be you.

Off-hand remarks? How many different times have you berated this man over this point? Why canā€™t you accept his apology?

He doesnā€™t have apologize to me, thereā€™s nothing to accept. I donā€™t give a shit about what he did or anything about him. I never even heard of him until this reporting. He did nothing to me except become the object of undeserved attention at TPM. And you can get off my case. Unload on somebody else whoā€™s been critical of him

I have. But your truncating of his apology to suggest he wasnā€™t the least bit apologetic was the best place to start. At least quote the guy fully and correctly. I donā€™t even like this fucking guy, but Iā€™m getting really tired of the supposedly high-minded liberals Iā€™ve always expected at TPM acting like the other side, only from a different angle. I donā€™t mean to single you out, I really donā€™t, and I usually enjoy your comments very much, but right now this bitterness thatā€™s all over each Stephen A. Smith thread is just untenable: bitterness, ugliness, unwillingness to forgive. Heā€™s nobody ā€“ why are people so fucking sour and harsh?

Iā€™m sorry, Iā€™m tired of it. Iā€™d rather be among people who hope for the best and seek out our better angels, rather than demonizing every little fucking thing.

The nature of the reporting is to get us who read it riled up, angry, hair on fire, all that, and so like lab rats we respond accordingly and ask for another hit. Iā€™m done with Smith and his story, but tomorrow is another day with more rabid reporting. All of us need to calm down a little.

This whole thing just sauntered out in slow motion. Now, heā€™s got a week off. Itā€™s like ESPN just now decided it cared for some reason.

All this because he backed off the truth. I told you, when you blink, you pay for it.
