Discussion for article #246818

And who is being lynched or denied lunch?

Yep. If you’re not dragging behind a pick-up truck at the end of a chain, it’s all good.

The next smart thing Stephen A. Smith says will be his first.

then that will be awhile, right?

In January, ESPN urged on-air talent and contract employees to avoid political commentary and suspended former MLB star pitcher Curt Schilling for comments comparing Muslims to Nazis.

Well it’s not quite like comparing Muslims to Nazis. And I wonder if you could argue that discussing racism off the air isn’t exactly “political”. He’s entitled to voice an opinion. I’m not saying he’s right, just arguing narrowly that he’s not violating that ESPN policy and that he shouldn’t be suspended. It’s just a first amendment thing.

If I’m not mistaken this guy was traded in the last Race Draft for Matt McGorry.

He used that first amendment right in Alabama, a state that is facing some federal action over voter access.

ESPN is a private company…

The 1st Amendment only protects your speech from the government, not from the whims of an employer. If they don’t like what you say, they have the right to take action against up to and including terminating your employment.

Uh, the First Amendment addresses the government not being allowed to create laws to prevent free speech. Last time I checked, ESPN was still a private entity, not the government. They can do whatever the hell they want with their on-air talent and the on-air talent for a private entity can be expected to face consequences of their “free speech”.

BTW I should note he’s back in hot water again this week after taking potshots at Trump and Clinton. Schilling is not what you would call a MENSA candidate.

Edited to add:

This is from the ESPN statement at the time, Schilling’s own words:

Meaning even he knew it wasn’t a First Amendment issue. Doesn’t seem to stop him regardless, but let’s not brand everything a free speech issue when it’s clearly not one.

Good work Stephen…pull that ladder up behind you, asshole.

racism post lynchings and cross burning comes in the form of minorities with similar criminal backgrounds as whites getting longer and harsher prison sentences than their white counterparts, banks targeting minority communities for sub-prime loans, black children being suspended for misbehavior while white children get warnings in school, the first black POTUS having his birthplace questioned (and whose leading the pack for the GOP nomination? oh yeah the chief birther himself),…

Do you honestly believe that 50 years of civil rights legislation that caused a seismic shift in the philosophical direction of both major political parties, healed hundreds of years of white supremacist thought and behavior

I won’t even talk about police brutality, and the systematic targeting of Blacks and Latinos, with policies like stop and frisk. You think it’s a coincidence that Blacks make up 85% of the prison population although Blacks are only 15% of the population? Unless you believe of course that Black people are sub-human animals that need constant harassment from the police

This is what happens when you spend that much time being influenced by people like Skip Bayless. You’ll always have this cadre of well compensated house niggas here to tell White people that everything is ok

The mute button was invented because of Stephen A. Smith.

Somebody needs to be pulled over by cops in Georgia.

Because young blacks aren’t followed around in stores, suspended from school at 4X the rate of whites, routinely pulled over and detained by police. None of that happens to young blacks.

What a maroon.

Stephen Smith is a turd, just like his buddy Skip Bayliss, only worse. To tell college students they don’t experience racism is insane.

As far as ESPN’s policies towards comments from on-air personalities, it needs it. Curt Schilling is a enormous pile of crap. Next time he pops off, someone should ask him about the fail of 38 Studios and the millions of dollars the people of Rhode Island had to eat because of his failure.

Just add this to the ever growing list of stupid shit Stephen Smith says.

So . . . . … don’t blame the racist for being racist because they got problems too? Bizarre reasoning.
