Not surprisingly, anyone who knows anything about Chile’s economic history and the boom-bust cycle instigated by the corrupt dictators and their rightwing US economic “advisors” would know that this is entirely about the love for perverted murderers. After the crash we helped out a relative’s family by buying their house for a few thousand dollars.

President Kennedy saw a humanitarian, as well as strategic, need for a Marshall Plan for Latin America in order to uplift a poverty-stricken region and strengthen alliances.
Tragically, he did not live to carry out this plan, and in the half-century since we have seen the rise of right-wing dictators, neoliberal economic advisors couching proposals for looting entire developing economies under the rubric “economic reform,” a ruinous War on Drugs, reformers calling for land reform smeared as communists, and Catholic faith leaders aligned with the poor and marginalized smeared under the right-wing tag Liberation Theology.

At the end of the piece, Erickson made a move toward hedging his argument for supporting murderous dictators, but didn’t fully commit to the argument: “No, I’m not actually fully on board with my own idea. Pinochet was actually a ruthless dictator who dropped people out of helicopters. And I actually think Pinochet has been treated more unkind by history than he should be, but only by a bit.”
Because providing that most holiest of grails, A FREE MARKET, is so important that a whole shit load of killing can, and should, be overlooked.

Words just fail sometimes. The word NIHILISM doesn’t conjure the image of 100,000 corpses on a battlefield, 10,000 bodies in a pile in a camp, 5,000 people who never come home and just disappear. But this guy and his confederates have started down the road of nihilism, and that road and it will always lead the to edge and over a very dark dark precipice.

One of the fascinating wrinkles in the right-wing brain is its ability to juggle contradictions: for instance, its ability to call for strongman leaders who can “force through free market reforms.”
“Force through” = “use the power of the state to silence, intimidate, and compel through whatever means, legal and extralegal.”
“Free market” = “whatever makes Charles Koch happy: infinite profit, no taxes, no regulations, no limits on the toxicity or harmfulness of products, no liability law, no consumers’ rights: also, no safety net, no infrastructure spending (except for whatever spending is necessary to staff and equip a powerful military and law enforcement apparatus to keep the reified market “free” from a starving, wretched, miserable, hopeless populace).”
