To murder someone means to kill them intentionally and not in self defense. It’s pretty obvious that the cops didn’t kill him intentionally.

Of course, I wouldn’t expect a woman who stays married to a 40-something guy who’s been arrested 36 times and is still selling bootleg cigarettes on the street to understand this.

You’re still being an idiot. Intentionally.

From CNN:

During the fatal encounter July 17 on Staten Island, Garner raised both hands in the air and told the officers not to touch him. Seconds later, a video shows an officer behind Garner grab him in a chokehold and pull him to the sidewalk, rolling him onto his stomach. The New York City Police Department prohibits chokeholds.
“I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Garner said repeatedly, his cries muffled into the pavement.

Nowhere is self-defense a part of this scenario.

Again from CNN:

The grand jury’s decision came on the same day that the New York Police Department, in an attempt to bolster public confidence, announced plans to start having some officers wear body cameras.
“When something happens, to have a video record of it, from the police officers’ perspective, is going to help in many, many ways,” de Blasio told reporters. “And God forbid, when something goes wrong, we are going to have a clearer understanding of what happened.”

Once again, you post comments that are insulting and unnecessary.

You know nothing of their marriage, their relationship, or anything else about the two of them or their family.

Garner’s death was ruled a homicide by the coroner—which means he was killed intentionally, which makes it murder.

Does being a heartless dickhead come naturally to you, or do you have to practice to be so repulsive?

No, it wasn’t in self defense, you’re right there. However, at least from what I can see in the video of the event, it wasn’t intentional either.

Homicide does not mean the same thing as murder.

What this tragedy reveals so starkly is that there are just too damn many policemen on our payrolls.
Four guys to bring down one petty criminal?? Four??? The crime rate is down, folks, and it’s time to stop this waste of taxpayer money.
Either send them out on the beat, where they used to be, engaging with the communities to police them, not act like an occupying force loaded for bear.

Pantaleo knew Garner.
He knew what Garner did as a petty criminal.
To the extent that he was described knowingly by LEOs including Pantaleo as ‘The Cigarette Man’.

Pantaleo knew Garner was non-violent.
Yet Pantaleo decided to visit some violence-- in the form of an unacceptable chokehold upon Garner.
Pantaleo refused to believe Garner’s cries when unable to breathe.
What harm would have come to Pantaleo by loosening his chokehold to assess the situation?
None. Pantaleo was protected by three NYPD brethren-- assisting in immobilizing Garner.
Pantaleo made a conscious decision not to loosen the chokehold.

I’m confident the DOJ will move to indict Pantaleo soon.
I’ll be here to continue this discussion.

So killing someone is okay as long as you didn’t mean to do it?

Jesus this country is in the gutter.

If you’re applying a chokehold to someone and they repeatedly say “I can’t breathe” and you do nothing in response to their pleas for oxygen, how in the world can you claim this killing wasn’t intentional?

It was 100% intentional. If you’re choking me and I say, “I can’t breathe,” and you continue to choke me regardless of my protests, how are you acting unintentionally?

If you can say “I can’t breathe” that means you can pass air through your wind-pipe, therefore you can breathe.

And how exactly does that logic fare in the aftermath of Eric Garner’s death, ruled by the medical examiner to be a homicide caused by the compression of the jugular vein and the blood vessels in the neck? Do you understand what asthma is? It’s like the constriction of a balloon nozzle wherein only a tiny amount of air gets through. It might be enough for someone to squeeze out a plea for help but it’s not enough to fill the lungs. Not even close to enough. Brain cells start dying within minutes – it’s called cerebral hypoxia. Pretty soon that person is dead altogether. Really, dude, your ignorance is so taxing. Please read up on ANYTHING remotely intelligent before your next post.

To John_Boner: Try this. Get a lungful of air, then tape shut your nose and mouth. Now poke a 2mm hole in the tape over your mouth. Say “I can’t breathe” multiple times. Add the weight of a 200+ lb. man’s knee in the middle of your back. See how long it takes for you to black out. Remember, do not remove the tape. Please!

Terrifyingly, yes.
Having contracted asthma as an adult late-20s–
I’ve had my share of serious episodes and a couple of near-death experiences.
Sometimes it’s due to airborne allergens, caustic chemical triggers,
or a built-up tolerance to your emergency medications-- or lack of access to them.
You play control-games mentally to try to keep your breathing as normal as possible–
even with reduced lung capacity-- being reduced further as time passes.

And then there’s panic. The dire enemy of asthmatics.
I could tell you without much doubt that as soon as Eric Garner began experiencing asthmatic symptoms–
without perfect circumstances to recover-- he would have a very difficult time doing so.

On the heels of being held in a chokehold?
Under duress, without access to emergency meds/inhaler?
Being bound and having the weight of several adults limiting your breathing?

This was a death sentence for an asthma attack sufferer.
I have little doubt.

You’re going to argue semantics over this killing?
That’s a shallow position.

And have them wear UNIFORMS like all beat cops used to do. I remember when NYC couldn’t get enough funding to put two cops in one patrol car. Now they roam the streets in gangs (see Eric Garner videos)!! DETECTIVES wear street clothes and if these cops were DETECTIVES wasting their time on a guy merely selling single ciggies, WHAT A WASTE OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS!!

“…They knew…”

Then they’re bullies, authorized to use lethal force.
