Thing is, he is not totally wrong. The Naziâs went after anyone not Arion. Jews were the main focus of his policies and paranoia but communists, the handicapped and homosexuals were treated just the same as the others. Well, to varying degrees. Some were sent to camps, some exiled, executed and so on. But none of them were treated well.
He just really worded that poorly making it seem like it was an absolute statement. I really just do not like people comparing things to facist or Nazi Germany. It is used to much and takes away from what happened. I think conservatives are by far the most guilty with their generalized comparisons, but some liberals are guilty too. The ratio is extremely weighted though.

Seems pretty clear to me. The King of the Wingnuts takes the position that present day gays are the counterpart of Germanyâs Nazis, a total reverse of the proper analogy as the Nazis were the persecutors and current (and past) gays are the persecuted. Schultz simply reminds us of recent history in which the Nazis did persecute gays, and many others, and the mouth breathers go wild. It takes only a pale understanding of 20th century history and the the ability to âgetâ the point of an analogy, but weâre talking about the modern GOP soâŚ

A) However well-intentioned he may be, Ed Schultz is an idiot. This is a fact, not a surprise.
B) The Nazis did indeed persecute gays: also union organizers, socialists, communists, Gypsies, mentally handicapped individuals, individuals with wasting physical diseases like multiple sclerosis, and all kinds of other people. But mostly Jews.
C) The rightâs outrage machine is getting old. Of course, they donât actually have any authentic sense of right and wrong, or else theyâd be struggling with suicidal impulses due to all the really, really horrible things theyâve done over the years. Instead, theyâre like kids using a magnifying glass to set an anthill on fire: whenever something like this happens, they enjoy lashing out those outraged headlines and tweets, then sitting back with a smirk to watch everybody scramble and scream and fire people and demand formal apologies.

With the rise of Adolf Hitler, gay men and, to a lesser extent, lesbians, were two of the numerous groups targeted by the Nazi Party and were ultimately among Holocaust victims. Beginning in 1933, gay organizations were banned, scholarly books about homosexuality, and sexuality in general, were burned, and homosexuals within the Nazi Party itself were murdered. The Gestapo compiled lists of homosexuals, who were compelled to sexually conform to the âGerman norm.â
Estimates vary widely as to the number of gay men imprisoned in concentration camps during the Holocaust, ranging from 5,000 to 15,000, many of whom died. In addition, records as to the specific reasons for internment are non-existent in many areas, making it hard to put an exact number on exactly how many gay men perished in death camps.
Gay men suffered unusually cruel treatment in the concentration camps. They faced persecution not only from German soldiers but also from other prisoners, and many gay men were beaten to death. Additionally, gay men in forced labor camps routinely received more grueling and dangerous work assignments than other non-Jewish inmates, under the policy of âExtermination Through Workâ. SS soldiers also were known to use gay men for target practice, aiming their weapons at the pink triangles their human targets were forced to wear.
The harsh treatment can be attributed to the view of the SS guards toward gay men, as well as to the homophobic attitudes present in German society at large. The marginalization of gay men in Germany was reflected in the camps. Many died from beatings, some of them inflicted by other prisoners. Nazi doctors often used gay men for scientific experiments in an attempt to locate a âgay geneâ to âcureâ any future Aryan children who were gay.
Experiences such as these can account for the high death rate of gay men in the camps as compared to the other âanti-social groups.â A study by RĂźdiger Lautmann found that 60% of gay men in concentration camps died, as compared to 41% for political prisoners and 35% for Jehovahâs Witnesses.
The pink triangle was one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, used to identify male prisoners who were sent there because of their homosexuality. Every prisoner had to wear a downward-pointing triangle on his or her jacket, the color of which was to categorize him or her by âkindâ. Other colors identified Jews (two triangles superimposed as a yellow star), political prisoners, Jehovahâs Witnesses, âanti-socialâ prisoners, and others the Nazis deemed undesirable. Pink and yellow triangles could be combined if a prisoner was deemed to be gay and Jewish.
Originally intended as a badge of shame, the pink triangle (often inverted from its Nazi usage) has been reclaimed as an international symbol of gay pride and the gay rights movement, and is second in popularity only to the rainbow flag.

Iâm Jewish, and Iâm not offended by Ed Schultzâs tweet.
I understand that Ed Schultzâs was responding to Louis Gohmert, and that Schultzâs point is that the Nazi persecuted gays and didnât persecute people for being anti-gay.
Ideally, Schultz would have referenced Louis Gohmert in the original tweet for people who couldnât guess the context.
