Discussion for article #238846
“What we have discovered here in the earliest English church in America are four of the first leaders of America,” said historian James Horn who is president of the JamestownRediscovery Foundation.
What the heck does “leaders of America” mean? Most Native Americans had no knowledge of these people, how could they be their leaders?
Everyone thinks that people came to Jamestown to find gold and go home and live happily ever after.
This puzzled me too as I don’t think I’ve heard this before in my life.
Interestingly, the corpses were discovered last month by the use of listening devices after they started turning over when Trump declared his candidacy.
When this discovery makes it into Louisiana school books I’m sure it will be revealed these so called “scientists” hid the fact there were pet dinosaur bones found with the human remains.
White America. You’ve reached adulthood without knowing that’s the only America that counts?
I think this proves conclusively that Obama hates, and wants to destroy America (-:
No idea why, but this article made me wonder what North America would look like today if, for some reason, Europeans hadn’t showed up.
…and it’s all Obama’s fault.
“It was oh, religion was a big deal here, and that’s often overlooked.”
In the 1980’s my daughter’s middle school textbook discussed the Pilgrims with absolutely no mention of religion. Playing fast and loose with historical facts seems to be a human failing–the Confederate flag and other memorabilia that spread all over the damned place is just one example.
kinda wondering what they plan to do. i thought most archaeologists handle bones in situ these days.
I was taught that we “won” the war of 1812, and that the British started it in order to try to retake the USA.
Is it that strange that a Protestant might possess a reliquary only 60 years or so after the Anglican Church spun off?
I know that the lutherans and especially Calvanists of the era were iconoclastic, but don’t recall that being a major feature of the Anglican Church, which retained many Catholic trappings and customs.
I always thought Obama was a Roundhead going after suspected Roman Catholics.
It depends on location and the nature in which they’re found. Most historic and pre-historic remains in the U.S. are found during new construction developments, so they’re typically returned to a most-likely descendent for reburial in a new location. I was surprised to see they plan on keeping these out of the ground for further study.
Book learnin’ teaches the Pochahontas myth as well.
It’s not at all strange. It’s not as if every vestige of Catholicism was swept from Britain within a few decades of Henry’s break with Rome. 1607 is only 49 years after the death of his daughter Mary, who quite famously attempted to restore the Roman Catholic church as the official church of England.
In the end Anglicanism absorbed a great deal of Catholic iconography. And certainly family owned relics and heirlooms didn’t disappear—the families held on to them and they were passed down through the generations.
My bad! When I first glanced at the picture on the header, I wondered: “Why the multiple pics of Ann Coulter on a tanning bed?”
I can’t help thinking that it would have benefited the world more if they had just stayed home.
