Discussion for article #222303
It’s hard to believe the worlds greatest prison nation has not come up with a decent way to execute people.
I keep seeing the word “botched” in relation to this execution and don’t get it. What’s the preferred result of any execution?
Death.
And that’s what happened.
Unless medical personnel are involved, the only other option is a mechanical way to do this - by something like a gun, rope or guillotine.
The executioner could not start an IV line. Death as the injections were administered was more of a coincidence than something toxicologists would predict. If medical personnel had been involved they would have ordered a minor surgical procedure to locate and tap a suitable vein.
Executions could rather easily be done with no pain, trauma or exotic drug experimentation. But the history of execution always includes a bit of circus to entertain and instruct the masses.
This is the beginning of the end of capital punishment in America.
Why on earth would Fallin be able to have her own people investigate. First, they’re not qualified. Second, they’re not a disinterested, objective third party.
An unbiased third-party investigator should be engaged to audit this incident and all policies and practices related to capital punishment in Oklahoma.
oklahoma gov rushing the executions, trying to prove she had what it takes to keep the tp happy…
it will be interesting to see what the voters think of her next time she runs…
my guess is this will not matter at all…rabid dysfunction is the trademark of the gop
Is Gov Mary Fallin a Mengele wannabe? I would not be surprised to hear her say, in her manly voice, “Lets first experiment on Non Death Row inmates. I mean they can serve a useful purpose to their sentences and help society. We will even pay them.”
Many Oklahomans claim to be Christians. How can that be so when
an “eye for an eye” goes against the tenants for future redemption?
Cherry-picking the gospel can’t go as far as “revenge” and “excruciating pain”.
This story is so upsetting and the history of these illegally gotten and used drugs is beyond disgusting. What barbarians human beings can be and have been proved to be
They will vote for her. Oklahoma is a totally red state. Not one county in the state voted Democratic last election. Rachel Maddow did a whole segment on it.
I’ve forgotten. Who died of the heart attack? The one that raped and killed his roommates 11 month old daughter or the one that shot and buried alive a woman who walked in on a burglary?
I was this a botched execution? Did the murderous scum survive the execution? If the answer is no, then it was botched.
Why are you upset? That a piece of human garbage was blotted out of existence or that he may have felt a little discomfort in the process?
Who cares if he felt a little pain or trauma as he died? I bet the young women he raped and killed felt a little pain and trauma before she was killed. “Lockett shot her and the gun jammed. While Neiman lay there screaming, the attackers cleared the jam and Lockett shot her a second time. Even though she was still breathing, he ordered the other two attackers to drag her into the grave and bury her”
The Okies did not succeed in killing the prisoner. They induced a heart attack that took place after the execution was halted. If that satisfies your idea of a state sanctioned killing that was not cruel and unusual, fine.
Florida used to set people on fire. The only thing that put an end to that was fear that the Supreme Court would deprive them of the executions they so loved if they didn’t change the method.
So this is not the end of capital punishment in America, not even close.
On every thread like this one we see the same ignorant comments. “Well, what about what he did to the girl? He deserved to be tortured!” Believe it or not, we don’t just set aside parts of the Constitution when it suits us.
Their reaction betrays that this is about visceral revenge, not a measured response of justice. But visceral revenge sells.
I agree that people can be vengeful; however, I think that’s a vocal minority. They make a concerted effort to gleefully blog about how great it is. I doubt the majority of America wants to return to execution by hanging or firing squad, and I doubt they really want people to die sitting up, gasping, and scraping their fingernails on gurneys. Lethal injection was supposed to be a kinder method of execution. People didn’t bet on it being torture.
It seems that the complication of not being able to find a reliable source of the right drugs for lethal injection. I see not only legal challenges, but some shift in popular opinion over capital punishment as a result.
I’m not saying that we’ll end capital punishment tomorrow, but it seems that this has case has been adequate to increase significant interest. Unless, capital punishment states can fix the drug procurement problem, I imagine we’d see a decline in support for capital punishment.
If you truly think the man’s an animal, why would you reduce yourself to his level?
Some of us refuse to lower ourselves to the level of person who would kill another.
Reducing myself to his level would involve either raping and killing an 11 month old child or shooting and burying a woman alive. The Supreme Court has ruled against anything so cruel and unusual to happen to these gentleman. The only way I could be reduced to their level is to condone the one gentleman’s death by violent rape and/or the others’ being shot and buried alive.
