Discussion: Donald Trump Hits Club For Growth With Cease And Desist Over Ad

Discussion for article #240868

Trump’s (probably pretty good) commercial lawyers know nothing about political advertising law. What is actionable in private or commercial contexts is protected in political speech.

Sorry, Donny, but when you run for president, they can say terrible things about you and get away with it.

As a rule, the first candidate who complains about an ad or a sign is the one floundering and looking for any kind of relief in their downward trend. Trump?

Oh, they know it’s BS - as does anyone who’s ever seen a political attack ad. This is a pretty transparent ploy for free press.

Didn’t we just read about a case where a law that required truth in political advertising was overturned, because you know lying is a cornerstone of American politics?

I can hear the Club for Growth’s collective response:

Maybe not. I’d bet it was Club for Growth who released and publicized the C&D letter, because they knew it would be made fun of.

LOL…if Trump and his attorneys think he’s getting rich suing for defamation over political attack ads against him while he runs for POTUS, then he’s got some tremendously shitty attorneys. It holds so little water that they can’t even turn it into a nuisance suit that threatens big legal fees to defend it.

Donald Trump: “This? Takes three hours everyday.” Waves hand in a pftt sort of motion. “I have my on-staff barber start long before I awaken to start each day. I never did sell my stock in Aqua Net.”

Perhaps in part. Maladaptively delusional narcissists generally have some pretty thin skin too. While I agree he’s definitely gong to play games like this to generate free publicity, I also think Trump can’t let things like this slide. He’s got no ability to take or accept criticism or insult in any way, shape or form and is constitutionally incapable of letting things like that go unanswered with counter-threats, bombast and chest-thumping like a silverback.
