Discussion: Don Lemon: 'I Mis-Spoke' When I Confused Semi-Automatics And Automatics

Discussion for article #226736

Interesting the cons know all these pesky little facts about weapons.

Same reason I can tell you in excruciating detail what Shannon Tweed look(ed) like naked.

Go to a gun show ( after you’ve likkered up)

Buy a semi-automatic.

Go one booth over

Buy a kit to turn the semi into to a full…

So easy , an eight year old can do it.

And use them to distract conversations about gun access and gun laws from the larger issues.

I once worked with a moran who did that. Took it into the country to shoot it, someone heard it and called the police… he was arrested within an hour after he left his house.

I laughed.

Another thing is when non-shooters use the term “clip” and “magazine” interchangeably. Very few modern guns use what’s technically called a clip (an often-disposable metal or plastic device that holds the rounds so they can be put in an internal, non-detachable magazine), so if you use the word to mean magazine the gun people will consider you utterly ignorant and without any standing to comment on any topic involving firearms. Gun people are wrapped pretty tightly, actually.

How hard is it to convert a semi-auto to full auto. The kits to do so are available at damn near any gun show. Another conservative con job.

I was just getting ready to comment about clips versus magazines also.

I was raised around guns, own several, and still instinctively say clip. It gets me grief all of the time on message boards, but to me it’s like saying pop, soda, or coke… It’s what I was raised calling it, and unless I am really watching my words, it will continue to be the term that I use for all of my life.

Technically there may be a difference, but for people to use it as an arguing point, is as bad as dinging someone who made a fully comprehensible, and intelligent statement, but accidentally, or not, used your, instead of you’re.

Damn straight.

If Lemon’s argument is that he was able to by an AR-15, a semi-automatic, within 20 minutes, he was wrong since the AR-15 is a semi-automatic weapon, not an automatic.

But this is Don Lemon; he a typical broadcast, pretty boy TV journalist who doesn’t really know anything and refuses to learn.

Even a non-shooter like myself know the difference between automatic and semi-automatic weapons.

Well, except for pistols where semi-autos are commonly referred to as automatic because you don’t need to cock them.

But I mean, you gotta figure a journalist talking about guns on-air should be aware of at least the basic terms…

But, when they asked him what he considered an automatic rifle, he described a semi-automatic correctly. It was just a misstatement of terms in my opinion. He knew what he was describing, just used the wrong term.

Yeah well I bet Ferguson doesn’t know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino. Let’s have at him mates!

My guess is it started in WWII, because the M1 Garand took clips, so you had hundreds of thousands of GIs who said “clip” for the rest of their lives, and it stuck. But since gun ownership got all politicized and adversarial, it’s like a shibboleth for some people. People gotta lighten up. When I mention fly fishing to people, they immediately say “dry-fly fishing,” but I don’t get all bent out of shape about it. It’s just what people are used to saying in the general public.

My Garand M-1 generation knows the difference, and I suppose careful journalists will also.
Fact is, as others have pointed out, it’s an irrelevant detail, but of seemingly great significance to the gun nuts.

Also, and for what it’s worth, it was originally “load and lock,” and not “lock and load,” but the grammarians have given up on that one.
Tough editors, like the late Theodore Bernstein of the NY TImes would catch such faux pas, but today’s journalism standards are summed up with a dismissive “good enough”.

Understand and agree. See my comment above re “clip” etc.

Because all the NRA gun fetishists feel that if you don’t know what the difference is between automatics and semi-automatics or carbines and rifles or assault rifles and battle rifles or a pistol and a revolver or a sub-machine gun and a machine gun or an anti-tank weapon and a 20mm Gatling cannon…you have no right to be saying that guns kill innocent people.

Just ask Ted Nugent or Alex Jones if you want a rational, well laid out argument for unrestricted gun ownership.

Hahahahahahahahahahahhaha

you mean he doesn’t know the difference between an automatic mental penus enlarger and a semi-automatic mental penus enlarger? What a dick . . .

Lemon picked a bad week to not go on vacation.

I think that he should be prouder in not knowing an fly his ignorance flag with that pride.
The terms are pretty self explanatory really and if you don’t get to be in the gun freaks club because you don’t explain it to suit them, then you aren’t missing anything.
I bought my first real gun, after several BB guns, a 20 ga single shot shotgun the day that I turned twelve from K-mart and we shot clay birds and a few real birds for years and all I knew was load, aim, shoot, clean and the be careful basics. That same process has applied through one rifle, several pistols and my current girlfriend of two years that had a two hundred and fifty thousand dollar gun collection handed down to her (bad ass).
I don’t know all of the intricacies or hip terminology but I’ve lived a good 40 years with guns and never had a problem or accident.

Anal gun freaks are anal gun freaks and they can suck blue steel.
