Discussion: Don Lemon Ends Show Early After Guest Calls Story 'Fake News'

Good work, Don. Don’t give this nonsense any semblance of credibility.

I wish more hosts and pundits would follow Don Lemon’s lead.

Wow, from the guy that speculated alien abduction? black hole? caused the disappearance of an airliner to call you out on fake news has to be painful.

However, why not just cut the guy’s mic and let him blather in silence?

Lost opportunity, Don. Call him out - it seemed to have been of great interest to cost of Travel of the Obamas. Either it (costs of security and travel) is an issue to cover across presidents - or it isn’t. Since it was covered under Obama, clearly it is of interest to all of those who covered that, - or it was a hyped point, and perhaps that is the news. But aside from that, good for Lemon to cut off the line of attempt to delegitimize the point.

It’s the fake fake news that gets to me.

Uday and Qusay are in Dubai for the opening of a new PeePee golf course. Just how much is that costing us silly little taxpayers?

And don’t invite back anyone who makes mendacious statements, like Conway and Spicer and…

I don’t know… I’d prefer he cut them off and kept going. Letting the conversation cease because you’re frustrated just gives them their way. They want the news to stop. Don’t stop the news in protest…

I think there are two types of fake news:
-where the underlying story has been made up to attack the target; and
-where the underlying story hasn’t been made up, but it’s something de rigour and not newsworthy, but its presented as though it is newsworthy or bizarre or wrong in some way to attack the target.

This story is the second type of fake news.

But the bigger, scarier numbers are in this. It could cost us hundreds of millions of dollars over four years.

Media Matters defines “fake news” as “information that is clearly and demonstrably fabricated and that has been packaged and distributed to appear as legitimate news."

This administration’s white nationalist right wingers at the helm have declared that the press is the opposition party. To parse what is fake and dwell on “intended targets” is to overlook the regime’s end game.

Media matters doesn’t own that phrase, but actually I agree with that definition.

In the second type of fake news I outlined above, the information that is fabricated is the spin that has been put on the story. Ie the context is the fabrication, but that fake context hass been packaged to appear as legitimate news.

In the Don Lemon clip, he had frickin 5 people talking about the topic, none of whom was an actual expert in presidential security, to try and give a veneer of respectability. He’d rather stop the show early than let somebody say the emperor has no clothes.

Paris Dennard, a former staffer in the George W. Bush administration and now a political analyst and commentator, called the story “fake news.”

You got his name wrong. It’s Paris Dullard.
