This actually worries me. Though I think slvrfox is right that the idea is to delay saying “there’s nothing” as long as possible so the nut-case right has time to run with the story.

I believe the Democrats in Congress need to demand an official public apology from DJT to President Barack Obama and the American people. If he offers none–and I mean him speaking on live TV, prime time–then nothing gets done. This behavior cannot be condoned and it cannot be normalized. Demand an apology, Democratic Senators and Representatives. Demand it.
