I guess it boils down to whether BClinton or BObama White House politicos were held in violation &/o punished for advocating for or against specific candidates. I tend to not expect political appointees, particularly close WH appointees to be held as strenuously to the same Hatch Act standards as career federal employees [I’ve been a GS2210 DBA for 25 years] because it’s understood they are representing their party and not The United States Government in such matters. This is more Teapot Tempest than Teapot Dome.

Senator Hatch should be outraged, as should everyone, I suppose, but, you know, the Hatch Act dates from 1939, and is named for Senator Carl Hatch, (Democrat) of New Mexico… it has nothing to do with Orrin.

At the risk of sounding… ummmm… negative? This isn’t new. I read that about 150 years ago, two different regions of this country actually started shooting at one another, ostensibly over a disagreement regarding whether or not it was ethical, or should be legal, or not, for one human being to own another human being. Think about that for a heartbeat or two. One group of people became willing to, quite literally, kill another group of people, in order to maintain another small group of people’s “right” to own yet another rather larger group of people. I’m not sure it’s possible to sink much lower than that. So, I’d argue that we’ve not come low, lately… we’ve never been up that high to begin with.
