Discussion for article #229107
Republicans will say that this is being done because of their efforts to ban “those people” from getting into the US.
Only 5 airports are capable of screening in the U.S… really? That’s the best we can do…
It’s all that is necessary.
Someone needs to amend the Chicken Little story to include the rest of the farm animals giving Chicken Little an epic, curbstomping, telescoping baton beatdown, complete with a rundown of his resulting internal injuries, after they all realize the sky isn’t gonna fall. Maybe then the lesson will stick.
I think this is a sensible enough precaution.
That’s not what it said. Read again please. You’re reading into it something that isn’t there.
My take is that they are choosing a limited number of airports for several reasons, but first and foremost because that’s what makes the most sense: You re-route all potential carriers to a very limited number of airports so you have a limited number of potential entry points to monitor. Moreover, these are some of the busiest aiports, have the most security, have the most personnel and highest trained personnel on hand and were likely to be the original destination of most flights carrying such passengers in the first place. Furthermore, they are in some of the most populous cities where you would want to make damn sure that the virus doesn’t get loose and run rampant, as opposed to, say, Bumblefuck County Airstrip in rural Redstate. Sprinkle in a little bit of budgetary concern, training needs, equipment requirements and availability of nearby top-notch medical centers and you have yourself a rational answer.
my comment was somewhat jaded by the fact I fly a lot and can’t get a flu-shot because I’m allergic… and I have immune deficiency disorder.
Except, uh, Duncan flew into the country from BRUSSELS, not Liberia…how ya gonna screen that?
I believe someone pointed out yesterday that there are actually no direct flights from Liberia and that all or most of these flights are indirect/two-stoppers. I haven’t factchecked that, but it seems reasonable. Friends of mine who worked for CGI never got to Africa directly.
I found a non-stop from Dakar, Senegal to JFK. Nothing from Liberia.
It’s a reasonable measure, The wingnuts will find a way to hate it.
