Discussion: DHS Shutdown Looms Again: GOP Leaders Don't Know How To Stop It

Discussion for article #233853

It really looks like the Pubbies had more control over Congress when they didn’t have control of Congress. The Democrats in the Senate playing the obstruction tactics that the Senate Pubbies taught them for six years plus the Pubbie Baggers and the Pubbie moderates fighting each other has really turned the Pubbies in Congress into a glorious mess. Weren’t the Pubbies supposed to show the American people what great leadership was when they gained control of both Houses in the 2014 elections?

God help them if any Americans die as a result of this ham-handed attempt at extortion.

“Miracles do happen, but in every previous shutdown the voters blamed Republicans more than Mr. Obama… And if there is a terror attack, good luck explaining that Congress isn’t to blame because those DHS workers were supposed to be on the job even if they weren’t being paid.”

Netn-a-yahoo has to be laughing up his sleeve. Can you imagine the Knesset not funding the anti-terror apparatus?

“Immigration hawk Rep. Steve King (R-IA), conscious that the rule could pave the way for a clean DHS bill, introduced a resolution on Monday to choke off that avenue by suspending Rule XXII as it relates to DHS appropriations.”

Choke is actually a good way to put it. I understand that the majority wants to see their agenda implemented. This is true whether the majority be Democratic or republican. However, the majority needs to see to it that the basic operations of government are funded, so they can run smoothly and serve the people. There is no path forward for the republican majority to see their agenda of overturning President Obama’s immigration executive order. NONE! If they made that promise to their constituents they made a grave error. In the end, DHS and any other department needs to be funded. If the majority can’t do that then it is imperative the house in its entirety be allowed to speak. Trying to suspend the rule that makes that possible is about as un-democratic as it gets. They’re basically saying that if we don’t get our way the entire government will crash and burn. This needs to be stopped NOW. We can’t govern by extortion.

They just can’t figure out how to stop it. Its really, really difficult. I mean, how has every Congress before this one managed to do this governing thing?

I’m no lawmaker but the thought occurs to me that if the DHS funding bill were brought to the floor without any ridiculous poison pills and just given the basic yes or no vote, the not-drama drama would be over.

Then rather than playing the, lets do any dumbass thing we can to hurt the President, they could actually work on a sensible immigration plan. Actually work on immigration that is, not just wasting more time trying to deny President Obama everything.

Bu that would be WORK!!!

The other four letter word : )

I thought the Democrats had made a mistake with this one week extension. But if a clean bill gets passed, they get the credit for being reasonable. If things go bad, Republicans get the blame. So if the Republicans want to play politics, they lose. If they want to just do the thing that keeps the government running, the choice is theirs.

The two funniest parts of this article:

From the headline: “GOP Leaders Scramble To Avert Crisis”

They’re usually creating them. Oh, wait – they created this one, too.

And from Cynthia Loomis: “What we also know is that Democrats are far more willing to fall in line behind Nancy Pelosi and whatever she wants than Republicans, who are very independent thinkers.”

Words fail me.

That said, it’s a hopeful sign that both the administration and Harry Reid have finally had spinal implants.

If Boehner had any balls, he’d cut the teabaggers loose on this one and pass a clean DHS bill with the Democrats.

But then, people might start to think that he had actual leadership capability.

I wonder if Texas and Florida are really willing to round up and deport all illegals? The cost would be huge, not only for the actual deportations, but the economic impact it would have on their economies. We have had adequate immigration laws on the books for decades, the problem is, no one enforces them. Texas and Florida included. The Obama administration has made Bush look a piker in enforcing immigration laws. For Bush’s first seven years, he totally ignored the illegal immigration problem. During that time, illegal immigration had the biggest growth.

If anything bad does happen, our Corporate Controlled Conservative Propaganda machine will blame Democrats. And that is all you will hear for months to come.

Immigration hawk Rep. Steve King (R-IA), conscious…

I don’t see Steve King as particularly “conscious”

“What we also know is that Democrats are far more willing to fall in line behind Nancy Pelosi and whatever she wants than Republicans, who are very independent thinkers.”

“Yes,” Ms. Lumis said, "we all independently think that a black man in the White House is an abomination. We all independently think that anyone swarthier than Speaker Boehner is likely trying to kill the rest of us white folk. And we all independently think that as long as we’ve got ours, the rest of you can go screw.

Then she posted this video of a recent GOP conference: http://youtu.be/LQqq3e03EBQ

He has no balls and he has no choice. He folded like a lawn chair.

You know, all those Teabaggers hoping and praying for a government shutdown kept reminding me of something:
