Discussion: DHS Informs 21 States That Russian Hackers Targeted Their Voting Systems

What will Twittler freak out about at 0430 this morning? You’ve got Sleepy Ben trying to kneecap his Senate majority, heroes who did get captured probably dooming his zeroth-and-counting major legislative achievement, AND “his” DHS confirming that the Russians tried to throw the election for him?!

So many outrages, so little time. Maybe he can just smear 'em all together into some incoherent paste, the Russians convinced Ben Carson to give John McCain the brain tumor. Bad (or sick!)

If the states didn’t even notice the activity themselves, why should we trust their expertise to assess damage?

No, of course hacking had no influence on the election …

Hmm the election night results of Dotard squeaking out tiny wins in key states beating polling sure was suspicious. And now we’re closer to knowing why.

OK, so this all needs a lot more explanation and investigation, not to mention acknowledgment by the White House.

It’s “Dotard with Small Hands,” please!

Wait. Trump’s DHS knows this is a hoax, right? Did they not get the memo tweeted by Hair Twitler?

“…an unsuccessful effort to seek access to voter registration databases and other sensitive information.” Don’t worry, Russian hackers: Kobach has your back.

Red states respond: “We know…we were in on it.”

Dotard J. Trump works for me.

Sure, thieves jingling handles, then leaving. – or maybe tunneling under the house while you are watching the door handles. Are we also to believe that all these state IT professionals are truly better than the best hackers in the world?

Colorado’s elections commissions likened the scan to of their system to “burglars jiggling the doors of a house and moving on when they realize the doors are locked.”

The worry is not burglars who come in and trash the place or steal things. The worry is burglars who come in quietly and rearrange the furniture from what it’s supposed to be.
How do you defend against that?

The federal government is telling election officials in 21 states that hackers targeted their systems last year, although in most cases the systems were not breached.

Notice in most cases

Whoa, Erik. What’s this about? Hadn’t heard.

Couldn’t agree more! When did each hack occur and how do those timelines line up against the seminal meeting at Tramp Tower? Why didn’t this news surface as it was happening? How do each of these states know that their data wasn’t copied or compromised?

I want to see a complete list of states attacked, when it happened, and how that state first detected it.

The more info that surfaces, the more I’m convinced that this election was stolen by more than influencing people on social media which calls into question not just the presidency but the senate, house and local races. We already know that Gorsuch was a stolen seat and that happened right before our eyes.

Wisconsin’s elections commission claimed in a press release that the Russian hacking activity did not affect election results in the state or the systems themselves.

The assurances of Republican elected officials who resisted FBI and DHS offers of help, who have no background in IT or computer security, whose reputations and credibility depend on Nothing Very Bad having happened, and who are members of a party that would face an existential threat if hacking was discovered are just very, very assuring and credible.

Jesus. Evidence that the Russians were looking for vulnerabilities is evidence they were trying to hack you. It’s not evidence that they didn’t hack you. It’s evidence they were looking for low hanging fruit. If they didn’t find it, they didn’t just shrug their shoulders and give the fuck up.

Because that’s what a hacker is going to do. First they’re going to look for low hanging fruit, because that’s always what you do first. Spending time and money and effort doing something clever and then finding out it was unnecessary because you’re hacking idiots is maddening. But if they don’t find low hanging fruit, they don’t just fucking shrug their shoulders and go away. Instead they start searching for data on personnel looking to social engineer someone. Then they’ll start probing to determine how good the spam filtering is. And then they’ll spearphish.

And if it happened, that’s how it happened. And if they did it, you’ll have to do a hell of a lot more intrusive and annoying probing and analysis to find the tracks than just looking at the effing DNS or firewall logs, which is all this is referencing.

God, notice how the F-Bombs start dropping as soon as I start talking about this stuff. That’s how I talked when I was a full time IT guy, back before law school in the stone knives and bearskins and 5.25 inch floppy and punched-card days.

Thanks for the link - it at least states that these hacks occurred in September of last year.

When did Bannon join the campaign again? Oh, that’s right - end of August. I really want Bannon implicated in all of this but he’s a slippery little fucker.
