Elections are one place we need to drop the efficiency fetish, and just go back to the paper world. It would be well worth the random errors, labor cost and suspense who the winner is, to have a system that could only be hacked by a corrupt government official.
Let the Karl Roves of the world pull their hair out a little longer . I’m all for it and at the same time lets solve the voter fraud problem .
Or do both. We could have electronic voting machines with verifiable paper records, like a cash register. Remember the disastrous “Butterfly” paper ballot in FL 2000?

The hacking in Georgia is being done by a higher government official. Likewise Indiana, Kansas, and any state with voting purge and ID laws

Russia is reportedly trying to disrupt the midterms in a less aggressive way than it did the 2016 presidential election …
… DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says she has not seen any Chinese attempts to “compromise election infrastructure.”
Then again, maybe they’re not monitoring it at all.

it only takes a little … the most insidious frauds get played out in the margins - the dark shadowy nooks and crannies - the scams like the shaving off of fractions of a cent … or the random virtually undetectable flipping of 15-25 -50 votes in each precinct … and then an unfortunate fire in the warehouse where the voting machines are stored after elections…

Do not question whether the Trump forces would cheat - only question whether they have enough expertise and sophistication to know where & how do it in a virtually undetectable way.
Oregon’s demonstrated for years a cheap, efficient, and unhackable system: All vote by mail. So many advantages, it’s crazy that we don’t do that nationwide. It’s nuts that we put up with systems that can be hacked in any way. And yes, federal voting standards totally make sense, at least for federal elections.
It’s past time for a constitutional convention, to deal with this matter as well as others even more pressing, like dumping the senate because it’s anti-democratic. But with the polarization in this country today, can you imagine the fireworks at a constitutional convention? Yikes!
Colorado also has vote-by-mail. What you give up in election day camaraderie standing in line, you gain 10-fold in election confidence. Also gives you time to scrutinize those ballot initiatives and obscure judicial races.
Please, TPM could you cover the North Dakota voter ID situation that is attempting to disenfranchise Native American voters? These are the same officials who turned the fire hoses (during freezing weather,Oct 2016) on Native Americans protesting oil pipelines crossing the Missouri River. (What could possibly go wrong, eh?)
