Discussion: DeVos: Tax Credits Promoting School Choice Won't Cut Public School Funds

It’s almost as if she doesn’t actually understand how public schools are funded.

…unless it’s a public school where there are any brown kids attending, then they won’t get anything.

Riiiight, because Republicans never use tax cuts to justify reduced social spending. That just wouldn’t happen, right?

So they want to give people tax write-offs if they “donate” to “scholarship funds” that pay tuition and other fees to for profit private schools. Gosh, who could that possibly benefit? I can’t imagine why anyone would object to such an “innovative” scheme.

proposal to provide $5 billion a year in federal tax credits for donations made to groups offering scholarships for private schools, apprenticeships and other educational programs.

“This is not a massive giveaway to Christian 501©3’s” Devos said. “It just functions one.”

Dat too!

Betsy DeVos knows full and well that this is not true. She is smart enough to understand basic math and the way schools are funded. This is just political posturing by an evil woman.

From the above, “The only folks who are threatened are those who have a vested interested in suppressing education freedom,” said DeVos.

Exactly! This is the GOP playbook. Make a statement that if read for words that specifically speak to what the GOP is actually doing, not the other way around.

Here is the statement again, “The only folks who are threatened are those who have a vested interested in suppressing education freedom," said DeVos. She is one of those threatened by Public education because it is freedom to all folks regardless of the color of their skin, their gender, or who they may pray to. Many School choice schools are religious educational institutions determined to put their stamp on subjects like history, like science, and on sex/health education. Their teachings to not compete in a marketplace of educational ideas, they compete in a christian religious marketplace. These schools are anti-education that does not fit their religious view, rather then promoting ideas that promote all religious views. These are the same vested interest that spout strawmen arguments such as the common saying, "you can’t pray in public school now days, " or “public schools don’t compete in a marketplace and that is where school vouchers and charters come in”. These are simply people with a religious agenda or agenda focused on the business of getting the dollars that local/state/federal governments pay to the public schools.

I am all for improving schools but destroying public schools and focusing on things other than addressing the funding, local v state v federal control of schools curriculum, standardized testing, school class size, teacher pay, school employee benefits, etc. just muddies the waters for public discussion. No one but focus groups and special interest created terms like school choice, or school vouchers for the public to consume. Something tells me these are not exactly the vested interests that DeVos mentions, but you can be damn sure these are exactly the vested interest that are trying to pull the wool over the publics eye, while they rob taxpayers dollars for public education and slowly turn the public system into a system that supports a anglo-european christian perspective.

“DeVos contends the proposal would spark new funding for-profit school and student loan rackateering that could be used for a range of education options including public or private schools buying her family’s 15th yacht.”

There was a story a few years ago about the Washington DC school voucher program. It
was foisted upon them in the late 90’s—00 by the likes of Newt, Boehner, Ryan etc. Apparently some vouchers ended up going to a Nation of Islam Farrakhan academy. Whoops!. I don’t know how they explained that away except it might have given to some Christian fundamentalist school like the one featured in the film Jesus camp.
