DeVos again shows her lack of education. The âtakeoverâ was not a âtakeoverâ - it was just getting rid of the middleman and so saved the federal government money. Universities knew which loans were government guaranteed before 2010 and nothing changed after 2010, except that the banks no longer got a cut for âoriginatingâ the loan before passing it off to the government.
Schools have be raising rates though. I can confirm as I have two in college right now and have had at least one in since 2012. On campus housing and food are ridiculously high.
Chief among them is an emphasis on helping students find âthe education thatâs right for them,â even if it isnât a traditional four-year university.
FWIW, I donât think that a four year college experience is right for everyone. But, to be clear, thatâs not what sheâs implying. What sheâs basically saying is that some kids should either pay for school themselves completely or not go to any college at all because she doesnât want the government to pay for it. If a kidâs family needs help in paying for a college ed., thatâs really their problem and so what if you canât even get a clerical position nowadays without a four year degree? Not her problem and theyâd be better off just doing manual labor. You know - in all those coal mines that have recently come open because of RumpâŚ

She attaches a reasonable assumption (higher ed isnât for everyone) to a problem that has more to do with the for profit sector which is selling online college of ?able value or overpriced vocational training.

One thing I agree with DeVos: student loans encourage schools to raise their tuition and fees. It badly hurts families that want to pay for their childrenâs education . The practice should be banned altogether or at very least limited to a minimum. States should do more to provide subsidies to worthy students, even if that means raising the taxes on the filthy greedy rich.

Considering âpublic universitiesâ are deriving less and less of their operating costs from the state, it is not surprising that tuition increases year after year. When I was an undergrad at the University of Michigan, my in-state tuition was well under $6000/yr.
So, then letâs make college tuition free. Wouldnât that solve the issue?

Her statements bear a lot of resemblance to the wingnut talking points on healthcare. Govât takeover, govât involvement will make it more expensive, talk of price hikes as if that had never happened before stiffer regulations were implemented, etc, etc. Meanwhile, she seems to think that cutting a significant number of student enrollments will improve our education system. I assume at this point that she has investments in stocks that stand to benefit from her policy changes.
