Discussion: Despite Flake's Wobbling, WH Official Insists They Won't Pull Kavanaugh

No surprise there… IF they pull this, they would not likely get another nominee in before the election, so they have to go ‘all in’. I just hope they lose

“of course we’re not going to pull the nomination”

There is no reason why we should hold our nominee for a lifetime position on the Supreme Court to the same standard as a Democratic senator who we might be able to defeat in the next election.

“We insist we won’t pull X’s nomination” is the political version of what is known in sportsball circles as the Dreaded Vote of Confidence. When the university president insists the football coach’s job is safe, shit’s about to get real.

Of course, university presidents are usually pretty good at playing stupid PR games, and everybody in the White House is a fucking idiot. Many people are saying it’s hard to read the tea leaves when you’re accustomed to dealing with professionals.

Flake wants to continue in politics. He knows this vote would haunt him. Go ahead, Mitch. Ram it through.

Kav is already vehemently denying Ford’s allegations. This situation sets up the Thomas-Hill he-said-she-said all over again, with predictable soon to be forthcoming righteous indignation by Kav on cue, hopefully with swelling orchestral score to highlight his goodness and scotus-worthiness.

Praying to dog this time it all goes down in flames.

Kavanaugh is going down. Republicans are in an untenable position. My guess is either Mitch asks Kavanaugh to step down or Kavanaugh does it on his own when he starts to realize it could jeopardize his currant judgeship at DC. The longer time he swings in the breeze the bigger chance more crap comes out.

“Brett Kavanaugh could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and rape somebody and we wouldn’t pull his nomination.”

A vote for Kavanaugh would certainly seem to violate the values he spoke for in his Senate retirement speech. I’m not sure, though, if Flake would see a vote to confirm as something that would hurt him politically in some future comeback.

You used the word “haunt,” though. I think it would haunt Flake if, after he voted to confirm, Kavanaugh was found to be lying about either the attempted rape or his knowledge of Judge Kozinski’s inappropriate behavior.
