Discussion for article #238593
Where was the Des Moines Register when Trump wars challenging President Obama’s citizenship? Where was the Des Moines Register when Trump tells lie after lie including the immigration issues? Conservative talk shows and main stream media created the environment for candidates like Trump and now they are shocked by the result. You can not put the genie back in the bottle. Hopefully they will daily challenge “the crazies” and affect a more meaningful dialog.
Hey, it’s a “free world”, here supposedly anyhow in America. Trump has every right to be where he is, like the many clowns on the clown car. Others are more dangerous than Trump, seems to me in that car. I’m glad Trump is in the race. He shows exactly what the GOP is all about, seems to me. I hope the final challenge is between him and Bernie. Bernie might win then, but the Donald has hit onto some very specific nerves due to his statements that are very offensive to millions (but not offensive to millions too). I myself am glad he’s doing what he’s doing - embarrassing the GOP and is their perfect altar boy, almost all of them in the GOP “management” anyhow.
““In just five weeks, he has polluted the political waters to such an
extent that serious candidates who actually have the credentials to
serve as president can’t get their message across to voters,” the
editorial board continued.”
The GOP as a whole, with Trump leading the charge, has shown itself to be the party of racists and bigots. And now the party that disses it’s own. They are the Love Canal of polluted waters complete with a dusting of agent orange. I mean it does look like Boehner has shared his tanning booth with “The Donald”.
I would look elsewhere than a GOP candidate for meaningful serious dialog.
If the other candidates actually disagree with Trump on the issues, then it’s their job to step up and say so in no uncertain terms. If they share his views and just would chose different words, then who cares?
I think The Rump’s greatest gift is proving that in the septic tank of politics, it’s neither necessary nor desirable to retweet every little turd.
Poor Des Moines Register editors’ touching naivety: “serious candidates who actually have the credentials . . .” LOL.
You’ve both put your finger on the more important thing here—the fact that the words “Trump” and “President” can be used in the same sentence comes from a combination of societal problems. Scolding Trump himself and telling him to go away are not going to solve them. We have a major political party in thrall to theocrats and oligarchs, an electorate that makes decisions on self-government on the most vague, impressionistic basis possible, and a media that have forgotten, if they ever knew, what their fucking job is. If Trump becomes a Trappist monk none of that will change. And the editorial board of a newspaper ought to know that.
Where was the Des Moines Register in 1980, when Ronald Reagan inflicted Lee Atwater on this world? We’ve been living with coarsened and cheapened politics for much longer than Trump has been on the scene. It’s how Republican’ts do politics. It’s in their Reagan-worshiping DNA…
When is the newspaper going to call on the rest of the clown car Republicans to drop out of the primary, too?
None of them are serious about anything. All they do is sidestepping the very real problems the Republicans made in the first place with their failed conservative ideology. One is more repulsive and offensive than the next. That they excel at with great determination.
I
Hey, Trump Points Memo, there are other people running for president. I even heard that some of them are Democrats.
“In just five weeks, he has polluted the political waters to such an extent that serious candidates who actually have the credentials to serve as president can’t get their message across to voters,” the editorial board continued.
Please proceed Des Moines Register.
We’re waiting to learn of those serious candidates with credentials.
The (R) primaries now require a laugh-track.

I realize it’s a typo, but I like it! Kinda like Trump’s version of “Info Wars”.

So true. It’s not just this messenger but the entire GOP field of candidates and the climate of hate that permeates the Republican Party which is the problem.
Reagan sold out to the Dixiecrats and other crackpots on the Far Right. The party has nothing to offer but bombastic, bigoted rhetoric and more austerity and corruption to feed the greed of the world’s Top 1% multinationalists and the military industrial complex. They are deliberately letting the USA decay from neglect…while insulting our vets.
Jeb ! said yesterday in an interview that he would reduce the federal government another 10%, hire more of his contractor friends and let them build toll roads instead of fix our existing infrastructure. That’s supposed to be the solution to decades of neglect and graft? More graft and stupidity?
Where was the Register when John Kerry’s war record was being dragged through the mud? It’s a little late for their faux outrage over disparaging remarks made about the people who serve.
Only Republicans can be heroes…in their own alternative universe?
It’s a small thing considering the rest of the editorial, but “feckless blowhard” is a direct hit.
…a feckless blowhard who can generate headlines, name recognition and polling numbers not by provoking thought, but by provoking outrage.
See now they are just making him sound like your typical Republican candidate for elected office…
I know!!
“By using his considerable wealth, his celebrity status, and his mouth to draw attention to himself, rather than to raise awareness of the issues facing America, he has coarsened our political dialogue and cheapened the electoral process,” the editorial reads.
Could a newspaper editorial board be any more clueless? Or perhaps too disingenuous. Hilarious.
