Discussion: Dennis Hastert Sentenced To TK In Hush Money Case

His legal team should be able to appeal the sentencing phase long enough for Hastert to live out his life in a comfortable fashion. If he spends a full day in jail I’d be surprised.

I’m confused…the plea deal says 0 - 6 months, the sentencing was 15 months. Is that being “suspended” down to 6 and then 2 years of supervised release, or is the expectation of 15 months in jail?

How many Republican speakers have had to serve time? I can’t keep track of them all.

“Hastert also took the stand Wednesday, apologizing to alleged sex abuse victims…”

If he apologized to them in court, I don’t see why it’s necessary to say “alleged”.

Too many assumptions from you. I’ll be surprised if you ever give up your cynicism.

“Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican House Speaker in history, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison and two years of supervised release for illegally structuring bank withdrawals in an effort to conceal his alleged sexual abuse of boys decades ago,”

If Tom DeLay hadn’t written a letter in Hastert’s behalf, he would have gotten 5 months.

Maybe it was a “I’m sorry if you were offended by being allegedly molested”.

I guess showing up in a wheelchair didn’t generate enough sympathy to get him a reduced sentence.

I do think the statute of limitations on sexually abusing a minor should be 40 years - it often takes that long for someone to recall and/or acknowledge the abuse.

What a tortured soul Hastert must be. As an out gay man (since turning 21), I can only imagine what it is like to continuously try and conceal that part of oneself – so much so that those desires come out in unimaginable ways, ways that hurt others so much. I don’t know if Hastert himself was ever abused as a youngster (that hasn’t been addressed, or suggested). I hope his victims have been able to reach out for and find the help and find some form of closure.

People understand and tolerate being gay or lesbian and in fact cheer coming out of the closet but what Hastert was a pedophile, always a crime against a vulnerable young person and not at all consensual, simply predatory.

Maybe the Limo was too much?

So, was the TK to be served consecutively?

Let’s hope Lauren cleans this up. Prosecutors had in fact recommended 0 to 6 months, but the judge imposed a harsher sentence. There’s clearer reporting on it at WaPo and probably many other news outlets.

So it would seem that Tom Delay’s glowing letter for leniency didn’t help. Huh!

I will have to read his apology. the only thing it wouldbe good for is if he said I didn’t abuse any others than these four.

The wheelchair was a nice touch. I guess the judge did not buy it.

15 whole fucking months.

It’s a wonder the people haven’t risen up and started lynching pols and oligarchs yet.

Doesn’t sound like the Judge has any intention of letting him sit home while he appeals, and he doesn’t have to.

White priivilege without a doubt.
