Discussion: Dems Hope Trump's Latest Immigration Attacks Could Spur Hispanic Turnout

Really a good article, Mr. Joseph. You covered all the bases. Thanks.

It could backfire. Hispanic voters, people who are already citizens, may sometimes be inclined to pull up the ladder after them, as so many other groups have done before.

Itā€™s hard for me to picture a large number of Hispanic voters thinking ā€œoh, now heā€™s really done it. Now I think Iā€™ll vote.ā€

Hereā€™s how small that ā€œcaravanā€ of refugees is: there were more people at Trumpā€™s inauguration.

Trump should spend the remainder of his life apologizing for himself

But Trump has decided to close hard in the midterms with a message drilling hard on immigrant fear-mongering

Granted I do not like tRump, havenā€™t since I first met him in the early 90s. However, if this is ā€œclosing hardā€ I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

I canā€™t post how I feel about trump. Itā€™s not a nice thing to post so I wonā€™t.

Agreed. I donā€™t know why people keep treating Hispanics as a voting group. We are not. There is a large population of Hispanics that are Trump supporters, but many others that donā€™t like him, but are pro-life and/or support a tougher stance on immigration. On the immigration front, itā€™s not necessarily that people ā€œpull up the ladderā€, itā€™s again that there are various groups. There are people that live here illegally for years and have kids. It makes perfect sense for them to be citizens (IMO), But how about those pregnant women that come here from China just to have American citizen babies? Iā€™m not sure Iā€™m even ok with that. https://www.newsweek.com/feds-raid-maternity-hotels-birth-tourists-777643

As a progressive-oriented Latino Democrat, I am constantly reminded that we, the Democrats, need new leadership in the House chamber. Take, for example, Pelosi et.al, should have been shouting to the high heaven that if the Democrats take control of the House chamber, she would bring forth onto the House floor, the immigration legislation that passed in the Senate and where the Freedom Caucus, tossed this legislation into the political dumpster.

And an appropriate alternative would be for the Pelosi Management Team to introduce legislation relative to our insignificant deficit and our massive national debt, in the guise of the National Debt Surtax. Thus, the argumentation thatā€™s found in eliminating Social Security and Medicare, would put all the faux Democrats on notice, that the continuing ā€œpanderā€ for Latino voters is elementally an ā€˜insidersā€™ game.

And yet, from an institutional perspective, there are three Stereotypes that Latinos need to overcome. One, is the Native American: ā€œHeā€™s just another white guy.ā€ Two, the Latino: ā€œEl gringo quere componer todo con su ā€˜Iā€™m sorryā€™ā€. And Third, is the European American: ā€œI donā€™t careā€¦Iā€™ll be deadā€¦So whatā€™s your point.ā€

Therefore, Pelosi and Crowd have a high bar to scale, but the ā€œleadershipā€ is based on ā€œHe who has the gold, wins.ā€ And thatā€™s our Latino Dilemma.

Dems need to lead more. It is abominable that Dem leadership continuously depends on Trump screwing upā€¦ instead shout to the high heavens to all ā€œthis is who we are, these are reasons to vote for us, join us!ā€

If they are worried about Hispanic turnout, actively recruit them.

Wishing and hoping doesnā€™t make people vote. Articulating emotionally compelling reasons will do it.
While most of us here on TPM despise Trump, he is a gifted demagogue. Who among Democratic leaders has the kind of hold on voters that Trump has over his base? Perhaps no one, because Democratic voters are more rational than Trumpā€™s base. Despite this, Democrats do a lousy job of motivating voters. Remember Ms. Clinton? Good Lord, what a stale, flat, and unprofitable campaign that was.

Leading from behind isnā€™t easy. They did their best in the House during investigations but without subpoena power the subjects got whitewashed. If they are fortunate to take the House and gain the power it may be different.

Hahahahaha O you think so?

I have not met many Hispanics who donā€™t still have connections to their origins. Most have family still in Mexico and Central America. I donā€™t think there are many Hispanic voters who feel that way. Im sure there are some but I do not think there are that many.
