Discussion: Dems Face Uphill Slog To Win Senate In 2020

Well, they need to fight that ā€˜uphill slogā€™ because of Mitch McConnell. Why they donā€™t hang most of these problems around HIS neck, I do not understand. Tom Steyer, do some devastating commercials about him. You KNOW he deserves that.

One factor that goes unmentioned here is whether Trump will suddenly become a good president or whether heā€™ll remain an extraordinarily shitty one. Seems like that might influence things.

It will all come down to health care. If Trump is able to get the ACA thrown out, and if the Democrats do not run on a platform calling for single payer immediately, they should be able to win on that one issue. What the Senate candidates need to do is to stay away from attacking Trump directly.

ā€œGreen New Deal is something we canā€™t wait to run against,ā€

How does that help in Senate races when not a single Dem Senator voted for it?

The fact that it is a presidential election year should help, boosted further by the obvious need to oust the current resident of the White House. If we cannot manage both feats under the current circumstances, then there is probably no hope for the country anyway.

Itā€™s gonna take a Blue Wave in 2020 to retake the Senate. The thought of winning AZ,CO and Maine Senate seats and the POTUS race and Mitch McConnell still being Sen. Majority Leader is nauseating. Thank God we held WV and MT Senate seats last year and picked up NV and AZ seats but damn you Florida.

Collins has demonstated herself to be a big phony in numerous high profile votesā€”she should be vulnerable.

McConnell has high negatives back home and unpopular things like the tax cut should be hung around his neck.

If anything things look less bleak than they did in 2018.

Damned straight. Not to mention that some of those GOP senatorial assholes might wind up resigning ā€œto spend more time with familyā€ (transl: ā€œto avoid indictment for RICO violationsā€).

Iā€™m hardly expert in this area but there seems to be a fair amount of tailwind for Democrats in 2020 including a slowing economy and growing indications of recession[1] as well as a POTUS with low approval ratings [2] (stuck at base level) and increasing disapproval ratings. Iā€™m hoping all that stimulates folks to exercise the only thing that really matters in a democracy and the only thing that is likely to save this one: the franchise, the vote; e.g., if Did-Not-Vote had been a candidate in 2016 it would have won in a landslide.

I donā€™t think he has it in him to be anything other than the disgusting brute he is.

Crowd Pac funding for Collins opponent now up to $3,776,823 @buckguy

Trump is a joke, But it wonā€™t be any joke to voters when they realize that the economy is cooling with major jolts to their future well being coming by 2020. There has be unease from the start when Trump won unexpectedly. Now the cold hard truth is setting in. We are at sea with a crazy man at the helm in waters now unfriendly to the US with an economic storm brewing.

Schumer needs to step aside or allow Pelosi to take the reins. It was her carefully crafting of the democratic message that won the House. Schumer is no Pelosi and heā€™s too wishy washy to build a carefully focused message. He hasnā€™t kept up with the times that is if he every has. This is no longer hard ball politics this is game of thrones and heā€™s not up to the challenge. Just to show how unsure he is and weak, after the dems won the house he would no longer meet with tRump alone as he had in the past deferring to saying ā€œnot without Nancyā€ when tRump called him. He knows he couldnā€™t stay on task and message alone. I think the man who should have have been the minority leader got run out of the senate by a bunch of purity control people led by a woman who is now running for president. Let Nancy run the show.

Heā€™s already proven heā€™s incapable of being anything other than a fool. You suddenly donā€™t go from stooge to head of the class. Thatā€™s the Faux GOP propaganda line. Voters are still waiting to see Donal live up to his potential. After two years, they know he doesnā€™t have any potential. This is the best heā€™s got. The worst is yet to come.

Retaking the Senate is essential - every bit as important as the presidency and it needs to be as discussed as often as the the endless discussion of the hordes of Democratic candidates. Hickenlooper should run against Gardner, end of story. Stacy Abrams should NOT consider anything else right now except running for the Senate. Is there a Senate seat open in Indiana? Good Mayor Pete could probably win it. Oā€™Rourke would give Cornyn a run for his money. I hope they all consider it after the field is winnowed down.

With this level of cheating, suppression, and god knows what else, itā€™s very possible to win the presidency and not win the Senate.

Democrats will not only win more seats in the House, but retake Control of the Senate and the White House. Democrats in record numbers will be coming out to vote, plus many republicans and former republicans will vote for Democrats because the republican party has gone totally off the edge of the cliff.

AP: ā€œMaine, where Democrats will try denting Sen. Susan Collinsā€™s reputation for independence as she seeks a 5th term.ā€

That shouldnā€™t be hard. She voted to repeal the ACAā€™s individual mandate in Trumpā€™s tax bill in exchange for promises that health care market stabilization measures that she introduced would be part of the package. They werenā€™t but she voted for the tax bill anyway.

Collins later said that she had written commitments from Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan that her ACA stabilization legislation would be voted on at at later date. They werenā€™t.

Then the question becomes: Susan Collins, duplicitous or dodderingly stupid?
