Discussion: Democrats, Skeptical Of Trump Promises On Gun Control, Try To Seize Momentum

Bait and switch.

Good luck with that Dems. This is going to shift back to the GOP several districts the Dems might have won as underdogs.

Shades of early DACA negotiations. Trump’s current position will last about as long a Popsicle in an oven.

Poor Dems. They still haven’t figured out the way the Republicans play the game. They encourage the Dems and the Dems push for it and then the Republicans back out and blame the failure on the Dems. Regular as clockwork.

This is 100x worse and the Dems are fucking idiots to fall for it. Trump is just blowing smoke because he knows the GOPers in congress won’t go for anything even remotely resembling anything he’s saying, so there’s no danger of it actually happening. The Dems jumping on it as an “opportunity” will merely provide the GOPers with an opportunity to rail about them being “gun grabbers” and rile up the base for November turnout.

The DCCC idea of pushing for gun control is telling congressional candidates not to talk about it.

This also seems to be the general strategy for about every other issue important to progressives.

Since what you just wrote clearly isn’t true, George, I’m going to ignore it.

Back on topic, did you notice the approach here, that they are playing to Trump’s ego? Can he “buck the NRA?” Will he be "swayed by his staff or whether he’s going to be the Commander in Chief?”

And it will provide the Democrats with an opportunity to rail about the do-nothing GOP Congress and rile up literally everyone else for November turnout.

Of course, what I wrote is true, but feel free to ignore it anyway:

An email from Evan Lukaske, DCCC’s regional press secretary, that was leaked to Huffington Post revealed the organization’s internal strategy after the Las Vegas shooting: "You and your candidate will be understandably outraged and upset, as will your community. However, DO NOT POLITICIZE IT TODAY,” he wrote, advising them to focus messaging on "offering thoughts/prayers for victims and their families, and thanking 1st responders who saved lives.”

The problem: Various members of gun violence prevention groups told HuffPost this DCCC email was “pathetic” or “straight out of the NRA’s talking points.” And the timing of the email leak is especially problematic after the recent shooting in Parkland, Florida, where lawmakers are again discussing gun control.

All Schumer and Feinstein need to do is hold a press conference and say they are glad to see that Trump will do something that Obama failed at.

You’re right. The Democrats always let the Republicans call the dance and the tune. And after the Republicans bully them enough, the Democrats go quiet and capitulate.

Diane Feinstein (D-Outoftouch) who said that Trump “can be a good president,” is reported to have “literally jumped with glee after some of the president’s remarks.”

No wonder we can’t fight.

Of course it wasn’t true but you never have let facts get in your way. Key word, there, George: “TODAY.” When you have figured out what that word means, do get back to us, won’t you?

Schumer and many other Democrats, however, remain deeply skeptical,

Go figure.

What’s not comprehensible are Dem statements of any optimism based on yesterday’s reality broadcast.

I don’t understand all the negativity here. The Democrats are pushing bills that the majority of Americans, including Republicans, want. Trump said he was onboard. When the rest of the Republicans block these bills (which will happen), the Democrats will be able to point out their failure to do what Americans want to make the nation safer, which is going to feed into the Republicans being even more worthless, which feeds into even more support in November. Or, the Republicans actually go along with these bills in an attempt to do something that everyone wants.

It’s a win-win either way…I suspect the Republicans will block as usual, but that’s going to be fatal for them in the current environment, if they do so they lose the youth vote, who will be engaged for once in November.

I never used the word “today,” which is an example of why it is useless to have any discussions with you.

You say things are not true when they are demonstrably true. I provided you a link to what the DCCC memo said. This story came out 21 hours ago. That is less than a day.

But when truth is not on your side, you attack the person. That is all you can do.

Have fun.

Unfortunately, the Democrats have shown to be spectacular failures at pointing out the failures of the Republicans, whereas the Republicans are very successful at demonizing and blaming Democrats.

Example: 51% of Americans support the recent Republican tax bill.

This is a failure to message.

A dog and pony show.
The dog gets killed when the pony trips over him.

“Literally everyone else” is not exactly rile-able. That’s proven by the historical record. Sure, it COULD change, but it’s not likely to.

The Dems need to ignore this carrot on a stick or they’ll be led blindly off a cliff. Message about getting things done, sure, but it’s not happening while the GOP control anything and it’s certainly not time to go to the mat and start proposing shit like Trump suggested or it will be jammed down our throats.

Your quote from Evan Lukaske contained the phrase “DO NOT POLITICIZE IT TODAY”. Kumquat’s point was correct.
