Discussion: Democrats Rally 41 Senate Votes Needed For Iran Nuclear Deal

Discussion for article #240220

If he has a credible opponent, Ben Cardin may have a problem in Md. That was a politically clumsy move for him to oppose. Same with Schumer. I don’t buy that it won’t cost him the leadership.

Senate Democrats have clinched enough votes to block a disapproval resolution against the Iran nuclear deal in the Senate. That could spell a major victory for President Barack Obama.

Yes, this is a “major victory” for President Obama. It wouldn’t have been considered a victory for any previous president, as the agreement likely would have been approved by Congress with little, if any, dissent and stories about it would have appeared in a two-paragraph article on page 10 of the newspaper.

EDIT: I just noticed that my comment now has more upvotes than the Iran agreement.

Think how great this country could be if the GOP wasn’t a millstone around our necks. Assholes.

This Deal is a big deal. Great work by smart people who understand Science, Politics, Policy, Teamwork, and Negotiation.

They sided with Dick Cheney, instead of Barrack Obama. Those votes will haunt them to their graves.

Schumer is a top Democrat – agree with Josh Marshall this should disqualify him for majority leader – and has to keep certain powerful supporters happy. He is safe though thank goodness for Gillibrand. Okay. Don’t know what is up with Cardin. Less familiar with that guy.

Way to go, Democrats!

When W was President, he and his supporters suggested that if you opposed his foreign policy, you were “giving aid and comfort to the terrorists.” I see you no reason to apply a different analysis now.

I had completely forgotten that Harry Reid was still a Senator.

Now, hopefully the 41 will support a filibuster, and not just vote for the deal itself.

I think a more accurate headline would be “GOP Gambit to Embarrass Obama On Iran Deal, and Damage the Nation’s Standing in the World In the Process, Collapses.” kind of long, I know, but it’s clear that would have been the effect.

Filibustering would be a good idea. Any GOTP who complains can be told that turn about is fair play.

AP story (carried by TPM) says the deal will give Iran “hundreds of billions of dollars in sanction relief.” Wrong. Jack Lew has testified that the number is about $56B, which will be available ONLY AFTER Iran has proven it has totally complied. Please correct your story, TPM, and then do a story on how the AP has been trying to tank the deal from the beginning through erroneous articles and outright lies. That would be a great TPM service. Thanks.

“Duplicitous and untrustworthy” describes the GOP just as if not more accurately than it describes Iran.

Yes, and that money will return to Iran no earlier than next spring, and only IF Iran has already complied with some pretty stiff requirements such as surrendering enriched uranium, disabling some centrifuges and reactors, etc.

But, but, but… “Benghazi.”
