Discussion: Democratic Presidential Candidates Marking Selma Anniversary

Sanders has highlighted his civil rights and activist background as a young man at the University of Chicago. He is working to reset his relationship with black voters, with whom he struggled to connect in the 2016 Democratic primary that Hillary Clinton won.

Also too, last November.

" You know there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American."

Haha self-censoring. Selma is a good place for any Dem to go. It’s REALLY KIND OF CRAZY we have to refight this question of whether fellow citizens can vote or not when it seemed pretty much settled but OH WELL refight we will because some of our other fellow citizens are slow learners and bad sports.

BTW is anyone finding it hard to pay much attention to these early jockeyings? They all just seem to be milling around right now. It’s only a few moments ago I learned that if he can be trusted himself to pronounce his name correctly, “Buttigieg” would approximately rhyme with “put a noodge.” He seems like a nice boy and I hope he has a birth certificate to prove he’s 35. But generally it seems early to even be thinking about this.

Not agreeing on things is one thing, but having to go back and argue the things everyone said they agreed on is a shame. But we’ll do it, because as my favorite fictional ADA said (paraphrasing) “We have only those rights we can defend”.

Yes, a lot of shaving jokes to be had there. Pretty smart fella though. We’re going to have to learn to pronounce his name eventually, methinks.

Jokes about butts too. Maybe that was obvious.

Seriously this is one type of person you meet when you’re involved in local politics in almost any way. Eagle Scout types, whip-smart and committed to the community from their youth. Currently they’re making stuff happen on a local and regional level across the country, probably tens of thousands of them. It might be interesting to see a real contender come out of this crucible.

Of course. No experienced punster would soil his hands with a butt joke. Heaven forfend!

OMG he’s gay. Didn’t know that much. Is America ready for the first openly gay president named Buttigieg in its history? Of course not. We’re a million times too immature. Fuck.

I read an article yesterday about the plethora of people running is worrying Schumer - because we need good candidates to re-take the Senate. I guess Beto has already ruled out running against Coryn (dumb, IMO), Steve Bullock, the very popular gov of Montana, says he’s only interested in running for prez, not Senate, Schumer’s choice in NC doesn’t want to run against Tillis, etc.

Somehow they’ve managed to elect a gay, ethnic Indian guy prime minister in Ireland. We can’t even manage a female.

LLOL Yes! Did you know Oxygen has like all 400+ episodes of the original L&O? I think it’s on Tuesdays they play like ten episodes back to back. I record them and binge watch them at night during the week.

Well, some of the people running now are going to drop out obviously and may decide to pivot to a Senate race. Also, I read something recently that said Schumer is trying to recruit Amy McGrath to run against McConnell. I think that’s a terrible idea especially if Matt Jones is still considering a run, so maybe Schumer’s picks aren’t the best choices anyway.
