Discussion: Dem Senators Urge WH Lawyer To Prevent Future Conflicts Of Interest

To be perfectly fair to 45, any lawyer he’d hire would be sitting on the bank of that money river with a giant bucket. The Senate Dems need to prop up the Office of Govt Ethics and hold public hearings, even if outside the Senate chambers, to drag this stuff into the light.

You might as well issue guidelines telling a dog to stop licking his nuts.

A lawyer can advise the client, but not control him. Especially not THIS client.

NOOO! You must allow that train of Toxic Waste to go completely off the tracks. It’s not the Dem’s job to make sure the Drumphites are behaving. Let them crash and burn then sweep away the ashes. Hopefully the body count won’t be too high by then. My hopes and prayers for the future victims.

Though I expect little change from the so-called president and his people, this letter needed to be written and sent. It starts the process, documents for the record exactly what’s happening, etc., and notifies the WH and the GOP they are being monitored. When the Democrats gain some electoral leverage, we will be prepared to take action.

One wonders if ethics can be taught to the “ethically challenged” or enforced by a toady subordinate. Just sayin’

A little weak on the GSA-Trump Hotel issue. There is a provision stating that it is illegal. Even if you didn’t know anything about the rules it would be obvious that it’s wrong.

I get where they’re coming from but it’s not anyone’s job to babysit the President. If he doesn’t have the foresight to act lawfully then let him hang himself.

If this is the same lawyer Trump relies on to help write up his EOs, I think this lovely letter by these 6 Senators is going to be a waste of time. McGahn is clearly in over his head, and doesn’t know the first thing about ethics, much like Trump. In fact, he was probably hired as a way for Trump to get around those pesky protocols, rules, regulations and laws.

From Don McGahn’s Wiki page:

During the early 2000s, he defended House Majority Leader Tom DeLay for his actions during the controversial 2003 Texas redistricting plan. McGahn also represented DeLay in 2005 during a Federal Election Commission audit of the records of Americans for a Republican Majority, DeLay’s political action committee.

And this:

In 2005, when DeLay was indicted for funneling campaign contributions into the Texans for a Republican Majority PAC (TRMPAC), McGahn said that “money gets transferred all the time”. McGahn also defended DeLay regarding contributions made by Russian oil tycoons to the U.S. Family Network. During McGahn’s tenure as in-house counsel for the NRCC, it was investigated by the FBI and its treasurer was convicted of embezzlement.

And also this:

George W. Bush nominated McGahn as a Republican-selected member of the Federal Election Commission in 2008. He was confirmed on June 24, 2008 by the United States Senate and was sworn in shortly thereafter. He is credited as having played a crucial role in loosening regulations on campaign spending.

Apparently he also represented Aaron Schlock for misusing federal funds, in part to dress up his Congressional office like a nightmare from Downton Abbey.

Soooo…he doesn’t sound like the best person to warn in taking heed over ethics rules and expecting appropriate behavior from elected politicians and other public servants in the executive branch. But hey…good luck Senators. He’s really the only one there that could make Trump aware of those things if he wanted to I suppose. I think this letter has put Trump on notice however. Now where have I heard that recently? Oh yeah…Trump warned Iran using that language. In that case, everything will work out just fine I’m sure.

The Dems are so adorable with their tough talk about Agent Orange. They use words like, “urge”, “suspect”, “discourage”, “likely”, “condemn”, “possible”, “denounce”, etc, while discussing Trump’s rampant illegalities and gross ethical breaches. It’s like no one has the guts to just stand up and scream bloody murder at this coup going on before our eyes. Trump could not care less about the law or Constitution, so why in the hell would anyone think he cares about ethics, traditions, doing the right thing, or self-control? Stop this crazed baboon before the USA is just a smoking crater.

Trump is a champion of conflict of interests.

Oh so much concern and outrage about financial conflicts of interests. But the executive branch is still free to torture, commit extrajudicial assassinations from the sky, and engage in fraud to launch aggressive wars, right?

It’s my perception that autocrats tend to think they’re safe, because they control all kinds of power, as a last defense, a great military power.

In doing so, autocrats overlook the fact that revolutions by common citizens have overpowered great governments. Look at the American colonists taking on the greatest world empire, or the Arab Spring overturning the wealthiest, ingrained bureaucracy in history, or the collapse of the Soviet Union by students. Republicans, their political policies as well as their moral leadership, represent a minority.

Push hard, Democrats. Or somebody else will.
