Discussion: Dem Senator: 'No Question' That Trump's 'Sh*thole' Remark Was Racist

“I was raised not to call people racist on the theory that it was hard for them to be rehabilitated once you said that, but there’s no question what he said was racist.”

Parents can be stupid too. I’m glad you got over that.

Some people are saying Trump is a racist.

Again: I look forward to the infinitely creative ways GOP members will try to avoid the moron campaigning with them this summer. It will probably be the most thoughtful endeavor any of them has ever undertaken, considering it’s the only real activity he sincerely wants to engage in. Good luck, guys.

Catch up congress, will ya.
The world already knows all about this character playing the part as president.
We are waiting for you, congress, to do your jobs, protect this country and get with the program.
It’s not party, the gov’t job, the pension, the healthcare, the perks that should guide you through this mess.
It is reality and the United State of America.
Do your goddamn job and remove this idiot from the white house for all the provable right reasons available to you.
2/3 of the members should be a walk in the park compared to non-action and the consequences coming.

I believe when history looks back at Trump’s years in power, they’ll find the cost to America in the trillions of dollars.

From the loss of soft power across the globe, the respect of our allies and friends, the fear of our enemies, the loss of the American Dream and the inspiration that gave to billions of people around the world.

Also, falling behind China, Germany, Russia, and others as we pull in our horns and minimize engagement with other countries while they maximize their business opportunities. Showing clear disrespect and disdain for more than half the world, I suspect, doesn’t help matters.

The next President is going to have more cleanup duties than a janitor on a norovirus cruise.

Then you’ll like this piece in which James Fallows calls on any two Republican Senators to do their duty and stand with the Democrats in demanding a defense of the rule of law. It would only take any two to begin curbing the abuses. They’d go down in history as figures of courage and integrity. Read it. This kind of thing is what I think of when people say how every media figure without exception is a supine, superficial normalizer. It’s just not so.

OT: Defending the press is a recurring topic in your comments. I read this yesterday and thought you would appreciate it.

Reporters are guardians of freedom. Their job is to pursue the truth. We may disagree with them sometimes. We may wish some of them would do a better job. But the press is a pillar of a free society. Democracy falls without it. . . .

And let’s not forget the amazing newspaper competition currently unfolding between the New York Times and the Washington Post — a race to do the best job at telling the most truth.

Name the reporters, editors, and outlets — including state and local publications — doing important work that affects YOUR life. Link to their stories. Say why they matter. Say “thank you” to those who tell the truth for a living!

That was excellent. Jeez, we’re so close.

I think we are going to see lots of parsing and clever word games. Rand Paul was just on TV using creativity to cloud the issue. He said that Lindsey Graham is being praised for correcting Trump (although mostly in private) but was not himself taken to task for comments about not being able to take all refugees from every “Hhole." He was implying that Graham’s "Hhole” was somehow the same as Trump’s “Shole," but while that might sound similar at first glance, it really does not hold up to scrutiny. A country that is an "Hhole” may mean that it is embroiled in turmoil, war or a natural disaster. A country that is an “S*hole” seems to me to be far more derogatory, particularly in the context in which it was stated (and let us not pretend that he did not say it). Graham, as much as it pains me to defend him in any way, seems to have meant that we cannot rescue everyone in trouble everywhere, which is probably true (but should not be used to suggest that we should not help where we can). Trump clearly meant to denigrate these countries, and nothing less disreputable than that.

Well, at least when and where a reasonable defense can be made. Often I’m knowingly talking about exceptions to the very dreary rule. But there are exceptions everywhere, and some good changes taking place. So it’s mostly the categorical denunciations and dismissals that I object to. If you know better than what you think “the media” are putting out, how did you learn? That’s the question I want to ask, and if there’s a better source available than the best in the media world I want to avail myself of it too. : )

The answer always seems to be that someone has the special secret inside scoop on the “real story”. It’s a sort of secular gnosticism. Only the initiates know the real truth.

Of course, every confidence game ever hatched relies on the same conceit.

“provable right reasons available to you” I’m still trying to figure out the “provable reasons”. Please enlighten me. The Dems need a platform that will unite and bring together the people., like inequality. Simply regurgitating impeach Trump won’t cut it. Especially since 90% will see an increase in their paychecks next month due to the tax cuts.

Anyone with a brain knows what trump said was racist. We can not expect the repubs to do anything about it. The repubs are afraid of their voters. If repubs speak out against trump, they are dead in the water. That is why we must get 4-5% more left leaners to vote for the Dems. That is how we slow down the repub/trump agenda. That’s all that matters at this point.

The Dems are fighting for what I care about. Haven’t you seen enough?

And plenty of Republicans howling about the cost naturally.

I simply do not understand this, especially for the younger, ambitious GOP members. Don’t they realize they would be heroes if they denounced him? So many Republicans voted for the POS because of their finances, and so many deplorables came out to vote just in 2017; they will be negligible in future elections, I predict. That’s why enough with the f-ing working class stories.

If there’s one silver lining to this shitcloud it’s that the Dems now have all the political cover they could possibly want to force a shutdown fight over DACA. Insist on CHIP too. Squeeze the R’s for all they’re worth.
