Discussion: Dem Rep. Slams Congress' Inaction Following Police Shooting Deaths (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #235269

ā€œIt feels like open season on black men in America and Iā€™m outraged. In fact, all Americans are at risk when bad actors in law enforcement use their guns instead of their heads.ā€

Evidently Rep. Johnson didnā€™t get the memo. Itā€™s open season on white Christian males. Ask Bill Oā€™Reilly.

Republicans see nothing wrong with unarmed black people being shot by police. 50 years ago, the same people saw nothing wrong with lynching.

and what precisely is congress supposed to do? local authorities should be left to investigate, along with the department of justice. considering that congress is absolutely useless, their involvement is unnecessary and pointless. just stick to the floor speeches.

50 years ago? What makes you think they see nothing wrong with it now? All they see is that it isnā€™t ok to say so.

I had the same reaction. The Justice Department can certainly get involved if the local criminal justice system demonstrates that it canā€™t deal with the problem in a given city or state. But what new legislation would make a difference?

There is certainly one thing that Congress could change, however - stop giving surplus U.S. military equipment to local law enforcement. Itā€™s unnecessary, and just makes a bad situation worse. When Barney Fife has an APC, he starts regarding the residents of Mayberry as enemy combatants. Bad mindset.

I think thatā€™s a good question. Since the job of Congress is to legislate, I presume any actions would be in that realm, like maybe a law that says any killing of an unarmed citizen by police must be investigated by an independent prosecutor.

Not sure that makes sense for a Federal law, but it really doesnā€™t matter since we all know, especially the Congressman knows, that this Congress would steadfastly do nothing even if it could.

So unless and until the Congressman informs us what he actually intends to do, it boils down to rhetoric to get the crisis into the Congressional Record, thatā€™s all.

The speech would have been more effective if it came from someone who didnā€™t belong to the Soka Gakkai cult.

Does anyone in Congress not claim affinity to a cult?

Or maybe a law that requires police to have remote access to automobile door locks? Mr. Scott might have remained secure in his car. Or at least not become a moving target. Unless he climbed out the window. Well, no one said legislation is easy. Boehner must have the hardest working Congress in history.

Someone get this guy on the phone for me, so I can 'splain it to him:

Uppity black man elected POTUS and exercising executive powers heretofore unquestioned when exercised by a white POTUS and thereby ā€˜telling white folks what to doā€™ = Horrifying dictatorial police state tyranny

White cops shooting black folks willy-nilly and the justice system deliberately and systemically unwilling and incapable of enforcng any accountability for their actions = Freedumb and securitah

THAT is what he shouldā€™ve shoved up their asses from the floor of the House.
