Discussion: Dear Television: Broad City, Season Two, Episode Two, 'Mochalatta Blues'

Discussion for article #232336

“Dear Television is Evan Kindley, Phillip Maciak, Jane Hu, Sarah Mesle, and Lili Loofbourow. They will be writing weekly letters inspired by the second season of Comedy Central’s “Broad City.” These aren’t full recaps, but spoilers abound.”

I would ask why, but then I realized Josh is selling space on this site. I hope TPM is well paid by Comedy Central.

You know, he could sell adverts for porn sites. Those always bring in the clicks…

I am sorry, but this weekly series is nothing more than a promo for a not very successful TV show. If Josh isn’t being paid by Comedy Central, then I have to ask if a weekly series is a good use of an editor’s time.

It pretty much never fails that The Hive reveals that TPM’s readership is predominately center-left middle-aged white guys with all the attendant cluelessness that implies. Broad City has generated quite a lot of critical interest, has a burgeoning devoted fanbase, and the layered social commentary that Kindley and Mesle explore is intentional and informed. The show is worthy of this kind of analysis and TPM is not the only site that’s exploring it.

That said, it’s still the case that the respective audiences of TPM and Broad City are largely disjoint, reactions here like yours are entirely unsurprising, and so the decision to run this and to feature it so prominently is either very brave or very foolish.

Seven hours, 5 comments including 3 of mine. I don’t think many people give a fig about the show.

Hey Ron, I get it. You don’t like this series. That’s fine. It’s clearly outside the interest area of some TPMers. But you don’t read add anything by what is essential libel. Do you really thinking we’re being paid by Comedy Central to run this series or is that just an attack you know to be false but which you add to make clear how unhappy you are that we’re running it? It’s not a rhetorical question. Think about what you’re saying. You’re saying we accept payment from outside entities to run stories produced by our editorial department. Do you really think that’s true? Or, again, are you just saying it for effect?

I wouldn’t call it brave or foolish. I think of it as an openness to experimentation and a desire to expose readers to new things, things they may not be familiar with.

Josh, the Slice is a brave attempt to expand your readership. I really want it to succeed. So far it has been very hit or miss. I just want more hits than misses. I will refrain from commenting unless I have something positive to say.

Maybe Keith is right and I am too old and live in the wrong part of the country to get this hip young New York material.

Ron, I’m really not against criticism. I may not always like it. But it’s healthy and it’s a good thing. I would just ask you to refrain from saying we’re crooks and frauds. I very much want constructive feedback.

I know you are neither a crook nor a fraud. I didn’t try to imply that you were. If I thought otherwise I wouldn’t come here. Anyway today’s Slice is much better.
