Discussion: Deal To Repeal North Carolina Anti-Gay Law Collapses After GOPers Cry Foul

Keep up the boycott of goods made in North Carolina and avoid visiting the state if possible until they get rid of this law.

In short, continue the boycott of North Carolina. That is the only thing that seems to get some attention there.

Next major problem for the North Carolina Republicans to solve: Arresting women who invade the men’s restroom at sporting events when the line for the women’s restroom is too long. Or women sports reporters who invade men’s locker rooms after the game. Happens all too frequently. Let’s make the men’s restroom and locker room great again.

There was never any intention of repealing the law. It was all bullshit.
Republicans lie, plain & simple.

Agreed. This was just a half-assed, pathetic effort for them to be like “See? We tried! It’s the democrats!”

“'We continue to encourage our leaders to never sacrifice the privacy, safety, or freedom of young girls by forcing them to use the bathroom, shower, or change clothes with grown men just to satisfy the demands of greedy businesses, immoral sports organizations, or angry mobs,” North Carolina Values Coalition Executive Director Tami Fitzgerald said in a statement."
Well there you go greedy businesses and immoral sports organizations NC don’t need your kind around them.

If the North Carolina Pubbies feel that HB2 is is right for their state, let them keep it along with the consequences. Don’t Pubbies say that people should be free to express their opinions?

And once Reps continue to prove they would rather cut off their nose to spite their face than ever admit they were wrong about anything. The party really is comprised of nothing but insecure lunkheads

Hit the jerks in the wallet. It’s the only place they feel anything.

Can we get some real reporting here in Aisle 4? Right now a mess of “both sides are to blame” is stinking up the place.

The fact is that, due to another Republican shit show, Charlotte now has NO ordinance in place to protect LGBTQ citizens and have shattered any court arguments for retaining earlier protections since they voluntarily withdrew their law in its entirety. Meanwhile, the super-majority Republicans keep their repulsive HB2 law fully intact.

This is hardly a collective failure. Instead, it is a punitive screwing of a populous, productive community at the hands of demagogues of the state.

Study the example now in all its glory and learn its lessons well, for the show is hitting the road, coming soon to a community, state and nation near you.

Why does the headline use the GOP friendly frame when even the first sentence of the article suggests that both sides have a case to be made for why the compromise failed? The article could have just as easily been titled GOP scapegoats Dems as HB2 repeal fails, or Bill collapses as GOP backs out, etc.

More significant to many people in North Carolina is that HB2 prevents people from suing employers for racial discrimination, and prevents cities in North Carolina from enacting local minimum wage laws. I believe that the real impetus behind HB2 was rolling back Charlotte’s effort to increase the minimum wage locally, and that the transgender bathroom part was added to get more support from the far right.

“McCrory, the first sitting North Carolina governor elected to a four-year term to lose re-election, echoed Republican accusations that “the left sabotaged bipartisan good faith agreements for political purposes.””

Pot calls kettle African-American.

Difference between how GOP treats white governors versus how they treated Obama- with white governors, they spend 5 minutes acting like they give a shit, then they screw him over.

Let’s not pretend that North Carolina is unique in any way - as far as I can tell, the only difference between NC and AZ (and other red states) is they seem to have better reporters there.

Charlotte might’ve held out longer, under the idea that the statewide law affects millions, while theirs affect tens of thousands (of North Carolinians, not transgender people). In addition, the NC GOP has zero record of negotiating in good faith.

As to boycotting them, I have to pass through there, and my gas tank won’t hold enough to make it. Anyone know where I can find a 5-gallon jerrycan that will fit in a crowded hatchback?

I have a little bit of similar experience driving across Kansas to go from Colorado to Missouri. I can offer two options for ya:

  1. Instead of carrying a can, figure out the minimum amount of gas you can buy in the state to get to the next station across the border. Instead of filling up in NC you can buy 5 or 6 gallons to get you across the line.

  2. Instead of a jerry can inside the hatchback you could look at a roof rack that has a jerry can carrier. http://www.rhinorack.com/products/load-securing/jerry-can-holders is an example.

Bigotry continues to define the Bible Belt.

Social conservatives defended the law…as necessary to prevent heterosexual predators from masquerading as transgender to molest women and girls when they are vulnerable.

A window into their own perverted MO.

As a bonus - gas is cheaper in Virginia.

Agree - if you ever need insights into NC’s politics check out PoliticsNC. Here’s their take on the latest HB2 bullshit:
